My fiance and I are looking to travel to Oahu and Kauai during the first two weeks of May 2016 from the Bay Area. We saw roundtrip flights from SFO/SJC going for $380-$400 RT and inter-island flights for around $150. Is that a good deal or should we wait further?

Hi Mona,
Anytime you can do $400 or better that’s a good deal. Also consider flying into one island and out of another in order to save a lot of time and potentially some money. There will be more sales coming up soon for spring travel if you want to wait and see if you can do better. Availability shouldn’t be an issue if you prefer to wait.

We are having a family vacation on the big island – all travel out of SFO or OAK into Kona. Departure 11/10 or 11/11 with a return of 11/18, 11/19, or 11/20 – so week prior to Thanksgiving and returning weekend leading into Thanksgiving week. I am planning a trip to Honolulu in July from the 2nd to the 10th from Jacksonville, Florida. The tickets are now ranging from $1,300 – $1,500. I know this is high season since it is summer. Should I wait to book my flight or should I book it now? I am looking at Delta because it has the fastest route to get there with less stops.

We are flying to Hawaii for our anniversary from Phoenix AZ and have a multi flight scenario. Phx to LIH on 7-19 and on 7-26 from LIH to OGG leaving OGG to PHX on 8/2/16, prices are at $943 currently. What is your advise on waiting to book this vs waiting if prices will drop?

That’s high season, one. Phoenix has little competition, two. Unfortunately there’s no reason to anticipate it going down for those dates. Price is $830 for the two non-stops. Inter-island is highly dependent on time of day. Best to buy that right away.

Thank you for this informative site. My husband just retired from the military. A friend of ours is going to get married in HawaiiOn April 16. We live in Jacksonville, NC. We would like to travel April 13 to the 19. We could be a little more flexible by a day or two but can not stay more than a week. I saw tickets a couple of weeks ago for 690. I did not buy because we were waiting for our tax return. Now the tickets are 980 at the lowest. We are willing to fly to a cheaper place to leave if needed. Can you please help me find the cheapest way to go? I really appreciate it.

Cheapest we are finding today with reasonable connection time is over $1,000. Somewhat better out of RDU if that works. Suggest waiting – it can only improve.

Thank you so much for all of this great info! I have a family of 4 needing to fly from Dallas to Maui this summer. We have a condo booked from July 22-29. We would like to stay a few extra days at a resort so our dates are a little flexible. The cheapest I am finding from Dallas is $850. I’m wondering if I should wait and possibly book a separate flight from Dallas to San Jose or San Fran. Do you think I could save enough money to hassle with this? I should have mentioned that if we do the San Fran route, we would go a day early and look around the city but on our way back we would want to just have a same day flight back. It would make me a little nervous if our flight was late though.

Thank you! Concur completely about the complexities about stopovers and even how much stress that can cause. We aren’t finding anything near $850 but rather $1,150+ for the nonstop and $870+ anywhere near your dates. Not likely that these will improve in July unfortunately. We’d give a 20% likelihood of a $50+ reduction. But having said that, availability for best routing could be an issue.

We were thinking of coming a couple of days earlier so departure from Chicago is flexible (can depart November 19-21) but must return on November 30. Fares are around $900-$1,000 for travel. American or Delta will get you there the fastest – about 12 hours. $1,155. If you want to spend 23 hours you can go for $1,000. Overall, $1,155 is best deal and that isn’t going to improve.

Much simpler as we’ve stated multiple times to have one ticket unless there is a real stopover involved.
There is no best airline. American or United will get you there in about the same amount of time for the same cost. Flying on Saturdays will probably cost you about $150 compared with other days of the week.

We are looking at purchasing 6 tickets on Hawaiian Airlines form Oakland to Maui 7/31/16 and returning on 8/5/16. Tickets are currently $714, but I see they are running a round trip ticket special right now for $388 for flights at the end of May. We will update early 2013 soon. Suggest waiting until fall 2016. One stop will be cheaper than the nonstop and so will mid-week. Switching airlines and multiple tickets is problematic as we’ve indicated before.

You did not indicate your destination. Using Honolulu, we find $600 RT from Oakland on Hawaiian Airlines nonstop for your dates. Typical price is $700 so that’s a great deal. Maui is about $40 more – also a great deal.

You can book 330 days out for air travel and even further out for hotels. Right now price at $560 if you return by December 8. Since Phoenix doesn’t get great deals at this time, it might improve a little, but probably not a lot.

With Virgin Air’s recent specials, now if you can connect in a timely way, it is less expensive to fly to a west coast departure city, switch carriers, then on to Hawaii than it is to book a direct flight from a midwest city which usually flies through those same departure cities anyway. At least that is how I priced it recently from Cleveland to HNL.
