  1. Hi! I haven’t seen my situation addressed, but forgive me if I missed it! We are planning a trip to Maui from Chicago June 3-10, 2017. It’s a 25th anniversary and graduation blowout and we are hoping to fly first class. Should I jump on fares as soon as they are released? I’ve never flown first and I assume the fares don’t fluctuate the same way coach does. Thanks for any help you can give!

  2. Thank you so much for this site! The information and tips are great and I’m amazed how you seem to reply to every comment! Mahalo 🙂

  3. Hi,

My fiancé and I are traveling to Maui from Los Angeles for our destination wedding in October and also planning to stay in Oahu for a few days after the wedding. Here is our tentative itinerary: 10/16 LAX to OGG, 10/19: OGG to HNL, and 10/23 HNL to LAX. Ticket price has been staying at $744 for months. When should we book our tickets? And what is the lowest fare we can expect? Thank you so much!

    1. Hi Evelyn,

When to book is already in the post and it is too early. Target price is $400’s.

      Aloha.

  4. Hello! I am wanting to fly from Atlanta, GA to Kona, HI sometime in December 2016, my dates are flexible, just want to guarantee a big plan (fiance is fearful of flying in a small plane) and get the best deal. Amy suggestions? Also we want to fly first class and on delta if we could. Or is there an airline that has a better first class?

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Lauren,

We aren’t magicians unfortunately. Looks like if you take the nonstop Airbus 330 on Delta to Honolulu and then connect to Kona, it will be about $2,500+ per person. Doubtful that it will improve. For all your considerations, Delta is probably the best choice.

      Aloha.

        1. Hi Lauren,

Afraid you’re on your own in this regard. We can’t recommend United vs. Delta 1st based on any recent experience. There are lots of reviews on the internet that you can look at. It is highly subjective, especially since the majority of first class seats are filled with their most frequent flyers who are loyal to whatever company they fly with.

          Aloha.

  5. Planning to visit Kauai (LIH airport), flying from Portland, Or November 4-13, 2016 with two kiddos (ages 15 and 12 by that time) and want the best deal with decent length of trip, of course (i.e. either direct or only one lay-over). Today I found $625/RT as my best offer. Tried to ‘google’ best days/dates to book LIH and your site popped up. Is this a good deal or should I TRY to be patient and wait for a better offer? It would be great if we could apply some of our Alaskan Air miles too, but not completely necessary if better deals are out there. Thank you in advance and your site is encouraging!

    1. Hi Jos,

Glad you found us. Currently $610 on Hawaiian. Best target price is $525 so there’s room if you prefer to wait wait.

      Aloha.

  6. Aloha, My family is flying from Denver and Los Angeles to Honolulu July 6th for one week. Airfares are very high right now, but your articles suggest, “We expect to see continued competition and strong discounting resulting in cheap flights to Hawaii.” Fares are around $764 from LAX right now. Do you expect them to drop for July travel? Should I hold out for another month? Mahalo!

    1. Hi Carol,

Here’s what we say about traveling in summer:

“Summer 2016 travel – book as early as possible for travel through August 8. Do not wait, expecting to find deals from mid-June unless you are flying from the San Francisco bay area. Bay area has had summer prices up to $150 less than normal but it isn’t clear if those will continue. Note: There is an outside chance that Los Angeles will also have lower than expected summer airfares, but that has not materialized thus far.”

Best hope is $600 or so from Los Angeles. Denver won’t go down.

      Aloha.

  7. Would like to travel to Honolulu-Waikiki beach area this summer. Have a large family & need a good deal.

  8. Hello,
We would like to travel from Boise to Maui shortly after Thanksgiving and before the airfares go up for Christmas. Current pricing is about $675 RT. Would we likely save much waiting until Summer to book?
    Thank you!

    1. Hi John,

If you care to wait, target price is under $550RT. Can’t say that will happen this summer – you may need to wait well into fall.

      Aloha.

  9. We have a hotel reservation (vacation club) for early August on Big Island. My first trip to Hawaii – husband did travel years ago to Oahu. We have no idea when to buy airfare. We are in Houston. Family of 4 with flights about $1000 out of Bush right now. Will this go down at all or is this standard for the summer? Still 5 mos. out so wondering when the best time would be to buy.

    1. Hi Jill.

Best timing advice is already in post. First have of August is high season and prices are not at all likely to come down. Prices are running $950 to $1200 largely depending on speed of connection. Suggest buying now.

      Aloha.

        1. Hi Jill.

Congratulations. So happy that you’re going to have a trip to Hawaii.

          Aloha.

  10. Aloha pumehana,
We are planning a trip to Maui from Denver for a family reunion Dec 21 – Dec 29. I see airfare at about $1,000 per person. Will this come down or should I book air now? We are able to add about a week to either end of the trip to find a better price (I noticed that car rental is half the price per day if the rental starts Dec 14 or earlier). Thank you so much for your help.

    1. Hi Stacey,

If you flew on Dec 20 and returned on January 9, prices drop to from $728-$815. Also, December 20 through January 6 is $783. These with good connections on United. Generally looks cheaper to extend into January if that works rather than come earlier in December. Hope that helps.

      Aloha.

  11. I am wondering what I should expect to pay for airfare from SLC to HNL in October 2016? When would be the best time to purchase those flights? I would need to book 6 flights! Also wondering what a good price from Las Vegas would be?

    Mahalo!

    Nicole

    1. Hi Nicole.

For SLC and LAS target is $500. Purchase timing is as indicated in post.

      Aloha.

  12. We are planning a 10 night to Waikiki aug. 22. Prices right now including hotel are about 2300 for both. Will it go lower or should I buy now?

    1. Hi Cindy,

You didn’t say where you’re traveling from but your IP address indicates Portland. Target price is low $400’s and departure August 22 is at present running about $475.

      Aloha.

  13. Looking for roundtrip flight for 2 from CLT to HNL Sept. 11-15, 2016. Buy now when I see a decent price or wait until when??

  14. My husband and I are planning a trip from Tampa Florida to Honolulu in October. Is 900-1000 per person the best price to purchase now or should I wait til when to purchase? Thank you.

    1. Hi Kim,

Target price is about $700. Most October dates are current pricing at $800. If you want to wait, timing is as per post.

      Aloha.

  15. We are flying from Phoenix to Oahu and then on to Kauai later this year (few days on Kauai and then last few back on Oahu). Thinking some time between late August and October(flexible obviously). I’m seeing approx $650 for flights, including the interisland flights. I think these are good prices? Or is it possible they would be lower if I wait a month? Thanks!

    1. Hi Nicole,

Inter-island is complicated – based on day of week and time of day, so we’ll address the mainland to/from Hawaii flights. Currently running about $550 and that has been about as good as we’re seeing. So if you want to buy now, probably no harm. Okay to wait as well. Purchase timing as per post.

      Aloha.

  16. Hi. I’m traveling from Miami to Honolulu in November 4th. The airline tickets seem to be escalating. When is the best time to purchase them ?

    1. Hi Ilea,

We’ve already answered that as best is known, in the post. Target price: $800.

      Aloha.

  17. Hi,

I plan on traveling to the big Island in September from Columbus, Oh for a week. We are able to travel on any day. Currently flights are listed at 1150 to 1200. Will prices come down in april and may? Thank you for your time.

  18. Hi there, my fiance and I are traveling to Maui, HI September 18-24 from Chicago. So far we’ve seen round trip flights for about $1050.00 per person. Is this a reasonable price? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks, have a great day.

    1. Hi Eliabeth,

Those dates are more expensive than ones adjacent. For example flying on 17th and 22nd is much cheaper with good connections ($700’s). Also it’s very early to be thinking late summer/fall, so if you wait it should also improve. Target price is $700 or less.

      Aloha.

  19. Hello, we are going to Hawaii June 14 until July 5th. We are finding RT tickets around $724. Is this a good price? If not, when would be the best time to buy? Thank you for your help!

    1. Hi Maria,

You did not say where you are traveling from or to but your IP address is Arizona. So not being mind readers, we’ll assume Phoenix-Honolulu. That is peak summer and prices will not come down. Cost is fair and it is best to buy now.

      Aloha.

  20. Hello!
I want to book a trip to Honolulu from 11/24/16-12/1/16.
I would be flying out of San Antonio TX and right now I am seeing prices at $678. Is this a good price or should I wait ?

    Thank you

    1. Hi Takara,

Quite reasonable price with little improvement possible. Maybe up to $50 if you wait, but that isn’t guaranteed. Suggest buying if connections are right.

      Aloha.

  21. I plan on flying out to Maui from Green Bay or Milwaukee on August 24th and returning on August 31st. Prices on Delta jumped about $200 dollars since Monday. Prices are $1,139 from Green Bay or $1,109 from Milwaukee. Should I wait and see if prices will go down in the next couple months? Or get these tickets now because the prices just went up this week?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Greg,

Prices should come back down – it is really early for end of summer best prices. Hang in there.

      Aloha.

  22. Aloha! We have a large family group heading to Maui from Detroit (DTW). Oct.8th-18th. We have seen a flux in price from $700-$950 per person. I read the best time to purchase would be late Spring to early Summer, but is there any sort of target price you could give me? Or what would be a good deal for this flight? Thank you for your help!

    1. Hi Bethany,

Are you 10 people – if so you qualify for a group rate from the airlines? Low $700’s or anything better is reasonable off-season. There are $600-ish fares but usually they have long layovers.

      Aloha.

  23. Hi! Currently traveling to LIH and OGG for my wedding mid September out of OAK. We went the same time last year to LIH booked our flight in Feb., and it was $408 RT. Right now, we’re looking at mid $500’s for just a RT To LIH. I know you say wait until spring/summer but am I looking at a drop at all? My family is all booked and I keep telling them that it’s going to drop but I don’t know now. Thanks for all your advice and helpful tips!

    1. Hi Courtney,

The airlines are counting on your panicking to buy now. Fall prices from the bay area will continue to be aggressively priced for those with ability to be patient. You may need to wait until mid-summer.

      Aloha.

        1. Hi Courtney,

Checking mid-week mid-September, and finding into one island and out of the other at $475 or better nonstop on Hawaiian or Alaska. That isn’t really bad for this far in advance, but it probably will come down up to $50 if you wait.

  24. Hi,

Planning to go to Maui from April 21 to April 26 from LAX to OGG. Right now flights are just below $500 round trip. It’s getting close to our departure date, should I keep waiting or purchase as soon as possible?

    Thanks,

    Joseph

  25. Hello! I am planning a trip from western Montana to Kauai sometime around mid-late August through late August-early September (for a week, dates are flexible though!). Currently, prices are about 650 RT; I am wondering if this is a good time to buy, or should we wait a few more months for them to drop (if they will at all?) Thank you so much! 🙂

    1. Hi Kala,

Best hope on price from Missoula to Kauai is usually about $600 so if you buy now, you’re not far from best price.

      Aloha.

  26. Hello – It seems October prices from CVG to OGG, 2 people with 1 stop, are holding steady at about $1000. Please tell us your thought- Should we wait or book? We want a 1 stop flight so will the availability of that tighten up?
Thanks so much for your help. Martin

    1. Hi Martin,

Generally availability for October is wide open so that shouldn’t be a concern. Price should come down by waiting per post details. Will also mention that the CVG market to Hawaii is particularly expensive and lacking in deals unfortunately.

      Aloha.

      1. OK thanks so much. Could you please tell me – Are you referring to this post?
Step 3: When to Buy Hawaii Vacation Deals. ▼ Martin

        1. Hi Martin,

Yes that’s it. “Late summer and fall 2016 Hawaii deals for travel mostly starting August 15 could appear starting anytime from late spring to early summer. We’ve already published the first round of late summer through fall deals in February.”

  27. Trying to book from April 28-May 11, Toronto to Honolulu and then Maui to Toronto. We are seeing 685 CAN, is this a good deal?

  28. Do you ever see any flight sales directly before Thanksgiving? Thinking of planning a trip to Kauai 11/18-23/16 or possibly flying out on Thanksgiving 11/24. I was wondering if going right before the actual holiday would be any cheaper.

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Casey,

Generally no deals anywhere around Thanksgiving. Sometimes on the day itself it will be better. But fall sales will exclude nearby dates per the post.

      Aloha

  29. Hello,
I am planning on traveling from Columbus, OH to Kohala Coast, Waikoloa anytime from July to the end of September. My first question is of the months mentioned when will be the cheapest time to go? My second question is when is the cheapest time for us to book this trip? Thank your your time and have a good day.

    1. Hi Ely,

Cheapest times to fly and to buy are already clearly indicated. Target price for that route is nearly $900 unfortunately. If there’s anything more specific, please let us know.

      Aloha.

      1. Hi,

Thank you for your previous response. It looks like right now the flights I am finding from Columbus, OH to KOA airport are listed around $1100. Would it be beneficial for me to wait? Would the flights be closer to around $900 in April or May? Once again thank you for all of your help.

        1. Hi Ely,

It may not hurt to wait but it isn’t very likely to improve either as per previous reply. Those aren’t dates for cheap flights.

          Aloha.

  30. I managed to land a flight direct from Phoenix to Hawaii on Hawaiian Airlines departing Aug 12th and returning Aug 19th for 500 round trip. Would you say that is a good deal?

  31. Hello Beat of HI!

I am planning to travel from SJC (or OAK or SFO; whichever is cheapest) to HNL, most likely between May 30th to June 7th. Last Tuesday, 03/15, flight prices stayed around $417 but is now increasing to $462-$520! I was thinking that maybe it is because this week and next week are considered as spring break so maybe after next week, prices will decrease? Could I be wrong? Also, are there any airlines or trusted websites that offer student discounts? I’d really appreciate the help! Thank you.

    1. Hi Valerie,

Yes there will be more spring deals ahead to be sure. $438 available today from San Jose on Alaska nonstop on your dates. Reasonable price if you choose not to wait.

      Aloha.

  32. Hello. My family and I (party of 7) are planning to fly from Wichita, KS on May 29th to Maui (OGG). We are planning a week stay in Maui and then flying from Maui to HNL on June 5th. We plan to stay just 4 days in HNL leaving on June 8th and returning to Wichita KS.
Do you think airfares will come down any between now and then?
    What is a good price?
Is it more expensive to fly into one city and out of another?
Our dates are a little flexible.
What airlines should I be watching?
Thank you for any help or suggestions you might have. We are excited, this is our fist trip to Hawaii.

    1. Hi Jitana.

There isn’t any savings in flying roundtrip. Either way it is costing over $1,100 plus inter-island segment. There’s probably no harm in waiting as that is so expensive at the moment. Target price is $900 plus inter-island. Remember to buy inter-island as soon as possible as it has limited inventory. Also routing back on round trip will waste 1/2 day of your vacation – that’s another reason we don’t recommend it. Best bets for airlines are American and United.

      Aloha.

  33. Hi!

I’m planning on flying from SEA to ITO on August 17th 2016, ITO to OGG on August 22nd 2016 and then OGG back to SEA on August 27th 2016. When would be the optimal time to purchase my tickets and at what kind of price ranges should I be looking for? Thank you so much for all your help! =)

      1. When you say target price is $500 do you mean per person for all of the one way flights? Or did you just mean $500 for the flight from SEA to ITO? Thank you for the help, it’ll be my first vacation to Hawaii ever, really looking forward to it! =)

        1. Hi Alice,

Sorry about that! That’s the target for the combined SEA-ITO and OGG-SEA.

          Aloha.

  34. Need a one way ticket from WAS to OGG Maui in February 2017. Current price on American WAS – OGG with one stop midweek is $465. Is that a good price? Do you anticipate lower prices? Thanks.

    1. Hi Phil,

That’s a fair price for one way from DC, is the standard offering, and may or may not improve by waiting.

      Aloha.

  35. My husband and I want to go to Maui Sept or Oct from LAX, what is a good deal or price range we should look for? Thank you!!

        1. Hi Kathy,

Not sure what isn’t clear in the post since it is all about when to travel and when to book. Timing depends on what season you’ll fly. Easiest answer may be to sign up for our emails.

          Aloha.

  36. Hi! Thank you for such an informative website. We’re looking for tickets from MSP to LIH 7/30 – 8/6 (dates our family has condos booked). We have a little leeway on flight dates, but not much.

Right now, the best I’ve seen is in the $1120 – $1151 range (usually on Alaskan or Delta). It looks like these dates fall into the high season time. Would you recommend waiting to see if there is a drop or is a change unlikely?

    Thank you again!

    Rachel

    1. Hi Rachel.

Thank you. Price is $969 if you change to fly mid-week rather than weekends. Even Fridays will save you 100+. Not too likely that Saturday prices will drop. On the other hand you’re at end of high season, so not too much danger in waiting to see if anything materializes.

      Aloha.

  37. Hello,
Love the website! We are looking at flying to Maui from Minneapolis, MN on Wednesday, November 16th and leaving Maui on Thursday, November 24th. $615 is the current round trip flight price with United. Is this a real good price or is there a chance there could be a sale in the future? It looks like MSP is much cheaper than any other airport in the midwest to go to Maui. Thanks in advance!

  38. Great website. I signed up for your alerts. We live in Columbia, South Carolina. Our daughter just moved to Honolulu. We’d like to spend Christmas with her, even realizing this is the most expensive time to fly there. What are your thoughts about flying in early December and returning after Christmas. Would that make the flights cheaper, or is flying anytime in December bad if we’re staying through Christmas? Also, is it a good idea to look for a deal to the West Coast from South Carolina and then fly Hawaiian Airlines or Alaskan Airlines versus booking all the way from the East Coast to Hawaii? Thanks!

    1. Hi Jean,

Great time for an extended vacation. If you fly December 8 and return January 4 for example, the price with good connections on Delta is $940. That in comparison with $1,300 or more if you just come for the holidays. Hope that helps.

      Aloha.

  39. Hello,
I am flying to Honolulu from Memphis, TN for a wedding during Labor Day weekend. I would like to leave August 31 or Sept 1 and return on Sept 6. The flights are about $900. Do you think they will go down?

    1. Hi Nicole,

Current pricing with a bad connection is about $850 and over $100 more with a good connection. Suggest waiting. Target price is $800.

      Aloha.
