  1. I am living at Charlotte NC, planning a family vacation to Hawii in mid and end August. The air fare I’ve seen so far from Charlotte to Honolulu then Kauai to Charlotte is ~$1017 pp. Should I wait for a bit?

    Thanks

    Carol

    1. Hi Carol.

Yes, with a current difference between peak summer and mid August being only about $50, it looks like there’s a lot of room for the price to come down if you wait.

      Aloha.

      1. Thank you, Aloha. I am currently planning my trip 8/17 – 8/28, what would be a realistic target price during that period of time? Charlotte – Honolulu, Kauai back to Charlotte

        Carol

        1. Hi Carol,

Right now it looks like the target price is going to be in the mid $900’s unfortunately.

          Aloha.

    1. Hi Lonnie,

You can expect to find prices at about $800 in the off season and $1,100 in prime summer or holiday seasons.

      Aloha.

  2. My wife and I are planning a once in a lifetime trip to Oahu with our kids and grandkids(total of 16 adults and kids ).we will be staying at Disney’s Aulani the week of Feb 11-12 toFeb 28–19.
We expected that our cheapest route would be to fly to the West coast on Southwest and then on Hawaiian or another airline to Hawaii. We could also fly directly from Nashville or Atlanta if more affordable, Needless to say this is a logistical nightmare and financially challenging . Any suggestions you may have will be more than appreciated ! Thanks and Mahalo, Sid and Joan

    1. Hi Sid,

For that many people, definitely check with the various airlines’ group travel desks. They do special pricing for groups of 10 or more traveling together. Beyond that, if you plan on meeting up on the west coast with a true stopover then separate tickets can make a lot of sense. Otherwise, if it is just to save money, 1) it may not save much and 2) adds its own logistical nightmare to your trip. Sounds like a great trip!

      Aloha.

  3. Planning a family vacation December 21 – 31, 2016 Honolulu. Will be flighting out of Portland Oregon. We is best time for us to look for 5 tickets. Would like to pay $600 or less for each.

  4. Please help, grandma and grandpa want to take the family 6 adults and 8 grand kids to Hawaii in May 2017.
Denver to big island. When is the best time to buy flights to get the best deal?
Thanks for any and all help.
    Sandy

    1. Hi Sandy,

The time to be looking is starting fall 2016. It is also worth checking with the group sales desks at the airlines as they offer discounts for 10+ people traveling together.

      Aloha.

  5. Hi BeatofHawaii,

I’ve been reading your website and found it helpful. My family of 4 are going to Hawaii in August this year. We are leaving JFK to Maui on 8/11/16 (Thurs) Maui to Honolulu on 8/14/16 (Sun) and from Honolulu to JFK on 8/21/16 (Sun). I’ve mainly looked at fares on Hawaiian airlines since March. At that time, the fare was $1,060. Now, it has gone up to around $1,400. We like flying Hawaiian because it’s non stop and we like the times of the flights. Recently, I’ve been searching on Delta too. The best price I see for the times that I prefer is $1,063 including the inter island flight. Should I buy from Delta now? We were hoping to get fares for under $1,000. We went to Hawaii 2 years ago. We went around the same time visiting Honolulu and Kauai and booked our flights 6 months out through Hawaiian airlines for $850. Do you think I should hold out for Hawaiian Airlines and that the price will drop under $1,000? I would appreciate your input. Thank you.

    1. Hi Leslie,

Cheapest with good connection we’re finding today is about $1,050 on United with one stop outbound only. Otherwise, you might want to wait. Good chance (but no guarantee) that early August prices could subside somewhat, giving you additional options. Just a gut call. Hope that helps.

      Aloha.

  6. Hello beatofhawaii! My husband and I and our 2 girls are planning our first trip to Oahu Jan. 11-18, 2017 leaving out of Nashville. I’ve been watching airfare for about 2 months and am finding airfare + car for about $830 per person on American. Can I can reasonably expect fares to lower this summer? It seems like from reading other posts that our southeastern location doesn’t get the great sales like the west coast and as airfare is the biggest expense we will have, I hate to pay more now if it will most likely lower. Thank you and love your site!!

    Amy

    1. Hi Amy,

$771 with two stops and $850 with one stop (both with good connections) is about normal for off season. Few sales. Unlikely to improve by waiting unfortunately.

      Aloha.

      1. Thank you so much for the response. You have taken some of my anxiety away:) By the way, your site has answered so many questions for me as a first time traveler to Hawaii. Thanks again!!

  7. Aloha Friends at Beat of Hawaii!

I love your site – thank you for all you do! Our family travels to the Islands frequently and have always taken advantage of the shoulder season prices; now that we have one in school, we have to start traveling during peak seasons. My question is this: we are looking at March 28 – April 8, 2017, from SEA – OGG. I know prices haven’t come out yet for that time but I’m hoping you can give me an idea of how much flights typically are during spring break as I have no idea what to expect. If summer flights are cheaper, we would likely just go then. I’m assuming that because it’s a busy time, it’s ok to buy far in advance as prices likely won’t budge much. Thank you for any help you can provide.

    Mahalo,

    Cortnee

    1. Hi Cortnee.

Thanks! Spring break is similar to summer but with some distinct differences. The dates for spring break start with a wider range of anticipated dates which then narrows down as it gets closer. Summer tends to be more clearly defined from the first release of the fare calendars. So chances of hitting some lower cost dates in spring break are somewhat better.

We are seeing March 7-24 as the high season dates next year, so you should be better off waiting rather than purchasing early. Target price is low $400’s and potentially a bit better even than that.

      Aloha.

  8. Hello. I just checked out some dates for late September this year and the prices went up. I read in some of the posts that prices should be coming down. Should I wait a little bit or will the prices continue to increase. I would greatly appreciate your help if you can please advise. Thank you!

    1. Hi Lee,

Generally too early to buy for September – per post information. And other than fare sales for fall we have noted recently. Also prices always fluctuate over time.

      Aloha.

  9. Hello beatofhawaii, first I wanna say thank you guys for all the help and information. I am a college student and I will be attending school during the summer. I have 5/28/2016 – 6/19/2016 off. I’ve been trying to find prices for around $300 like your site states for summer prices however all I can find is $550 and above. I would like to travel from SFO, SJC or Oakland to Honolulu for about a week or so. Will prices really be around $300 or am I stuck in the $550 price range? Please help and thank you guys again.

    1. Hi David.

Thank you. We don’t ever say $300 for summer. Low $300’s in spring and fall have occurred regularly. That’s obvious when you look at the Hawaii deals we have posted over the past few months. There are $378 fares currently for departure from SJC through first week in May. We expect that kind of fare to be extended for departure through May or even early June. After that summer prices will prevail. Subscribe to our updates and we’ll let you know when that happens.

      Aloha.

      Aloha.

  10. Hi, love the site and emails !

I need some help finding affordable flights out of Houston, TX. It is very expensive from Houston. Can you please recommend a way to go that’s affordable ? 2-Adults, 1-Child.
    Thank you very much. KC

    1. Hi Keith,

Low $700’s (one stop) to mid-$800’s (nonstop) is what you’ll find in May and again in the fall. There were a couple of true fare sales from Houston in 2015 which brought the price under $500. But whether or when that could happen again is totally unknown.

      Aloha.

  11. Aloha.
Seems like the Hawaiian flights from SD to Maui this July have gone down about $50 in the past week. Thing is, the mid-week flights still seem half empty (half full? 🙂 ) …is that a possible sign that the prices may go down even more being that its less than three months out and the plane has so many seats left? Or does that increase the chance Hawaiian would cancel that flight?
Mahalo for your knowledge and input.

    1. Hi JJ.

Probably neither. Airlines often would rather fly with fewer seats than to discount further. There are spotty $583 fares in July and it would be a big surprise to see them go lower. Normal is $700+. You can try waiting to see, but don’t be surprised if it goes the other way – that’s equally possible.

      Aloha.

  12. Hi,
We are planning to visit Maui in the week of Thanksgiving in November. How far in advance should we book our flight? Understandably the fares seem to spike. Should we book now or will the prices come down before going back up?

    Thanks!
    Mike

    1. Hi Mike,

Thanksgiving is expensive, isn’t discounted and has limited availability. Suggest buying now.

      Aloha.

  13. We are planning our 25th Anniversary in Dec 2016. Flying from MSY to HNL 12/9/16-12/18/16. When is a good time to purchase flights??

    1. Hi Enesha,

Expensive dates. With reasonable connection it will be $993 on Delta. Save $ by going on changing up dates some if you can. Go earlier. Don’t fly near weekends. Otherwise might or might not improve by waiting. Odds of it improving by waiting until summer 50%.

      Aloha.

      1. Thanks so much! Our Anniversary is December 14th. Flying into HNL on the 9th. Departing on the Norwegian for 7 days on the 10th. I can see if they have an earlier itinerary for the cruise. I just don’t think it will be “on” the Anniversary date. Love your website! !

  14. Thank you very much for all the great tips! We are traveling from Phx to Honolulu from 6/1/2016- 6/8/2016. Sites are saying to wait but Im so afraid that we missed out and the prices will just continue to rise. We are a party of 12. Thoughts?

    1. Hi Kori,

Party of 12 – call the airlines’ group travel desks. They should be able to help with anything 10 people and above.

Otherwise single person price is $460 RT and that’s about as good as we are expecting. Fair price – wouldn’t wait.

      Aloha.

  15. We are looking to fly from EWR to HNL Noveber 3rd to the 10th. When should I be looking for the best prices. I know they are fluctuating a lot right now but I don’t want to lose the chance on a good price. I do check the prices weekly and whenever you post deals. I love this site. Thank you in advance for any insight you can provide.

    1. Hi Paula.

Thank you! $946 on your dates or if you can leave on 2nd instead then $796. That’s for the nonstop flight. Prices will probably come down for flights via the west coast. But for the nonstop – not so sure. Hope that helps.

      Aloha.

  16. My wife and I just returned from our first trip to Maui and plan to go back next March. Hawaiian Airlines has a non-stop from Oakland for $413 r/t and I am wondering if it makes sense to purchase so far out. Thanks!!!

    1. Hi Frank.

It could get better, but you have to ask yourself – by how much. Thus it would seem to make more sense to buy and be done with it. Also March is spring break which could make things worse when it gets closer. Hope that helps.

      Aloha.

  17. Looking to travel with my family 2 adults 3 kids ages 8,5,& 3. Currently looking for flight prices for late July of 2016 or 2017. Question is, are there package deals available for families on flights? Or do I have to purchase all individually? Also is there a best website to search for flights and prices without searching each site one at a time?

We have a place to stay and dates are somewhat flexible, its just getting there that is causing the biggest issue on cost.

Thanks for any help you can give.

    Dustin

    1. Hi Dustin,

Certainly there are packages and you can also use travel agents. Will those save you money – probably not. Do you want to control the elements directly with the airline and accommodation? It’s up to you.

Flight prices for summer 2017 won’t be out for a long time of course. Late July either year will be expensive – prices go down as indicated in mid-August.

      Aloha.

  18. Hi! Thank you for being the voice of reason in all the craziness. =)

After 14 years of dating, my fiance and I are taking the wedded bliss plunge by marrying on Maui. Our dates are firm, 3/3/17 – 3/10/17. We will be departing from Cleveland, OH (CLE). Dates just became available. The last two times we’ve been to Maui, RT was $1100. I saw a rate today of $883. With Southwest rumors heavy, should I jump on the aforementioned price, or wait for a bit? The flight is 19 hours, and I don’t want to put my 75 year old mom through such a long flight, though she says she’ll be fine. Have you ever seen flights out of CLE cheaper? Everything is booked but the airfare, and we could use the extra money for wedding things. I really appreciate any info you might have!

    1. Hi Kimmy.

Thank you. So the cheapest right now is $1,081 with a reasonable connection time. There is no $883 that we can find. It might be less if you wait, but it might not. Spring break looks to be March 5 to 24, which could make matters worse. Just not sure SWA should figure into anything as there has been no indication from there for some time. And even when a new player enters the market there will be an attempt to hold fares for peak seasons like spring break. Gut call is to go ahead and purchase but that’s a decision you’ll need to make peace with. If you do go ahead, perhaps don’t look back. Congratulations and let us know how it goes.

      Aloha.

      1. Thank you for the quick response! I’ve looked at so many prices this week, the numbers are tricking me. It’s $897 on a 20 hour flight, according to Travelocity. I didn’t know Spring Break is so early, thank you for that information. I will let you know if I or anyone in my party finds a better bookworthy deal.

    2. I am a big fan of breaking up the trip–stop in Las Vegas or California. You don’t want to arrive all crampy and cranky. That might not happen if you are in First Class, but remember you are going for your wedding! And you have waited 14 years!! You’ll gain 5-6 hours on the way there, so give yourself a break. I nearly always use my Frequent Flyer miles and it actually “costs” less if I break it up sometimes.

I know this doesn’t exactly address the question you asked, but I hope you’ll at least consider it, and talk to others who have made that long flight, especially in the 75-age-range.

  19. Hi,

I have a timeshare that I would like to use in September or October for 7-10 days. Dates are rather flexible as long as it is after 9/19 and is not the first week in October. We are not sure if we want to go to Big Island or Oahu yet. Is it too early to start looking for flights? We could probably fly from Seattle or Portland. I know it’s always cheaper to fly on Wednesdays, but is there much of price difference traveling on a Tuesday or Thursday? Also heard the best time to look for new fares is Tuesday morning?

    1. Hi Tom,

They’re mostly all pricing at about $500 for Sunday through Thursday travel in your time frame. PDX-HNL is about $50 less. If you choose to wait you might see $50-$150 reductions, depending on supply/demand as it gets closer. That could happen at any point between now and then.

      Aloha.

  20. Hello…

It would be greatly appreciated if you could advise what a typical fare from BOI to HNL in November (approx. 10th – 17th) should be and when the best time to purchase tickets is?

    Any assistance is appreciated.

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Michelle,

Cheapest time to buy guidance is already in the post. About $550 would be a good price target.

      Aloha.

  21. awesome information! I have a questions for your expertise, I would like to take my kids for spring break March 2017 and of course those dates are not all available yet. What are the best dates to fly from March 17 to April 1? there are flights available now departing March 17, Friday at a great rate of $234 from San Diego to Honolulu; however, i cannot book the return flight yet and I am wondering if purchasing the departing flight at the low rate is worth it and if i wont be in trouble getting the return flight at a much higher rate? any help and guidance would be greatly appreciated!!! thank you!

    1. Hi Maria,

We’ll update spring break 2017 soon when all the dates and prices are out. It might work out fine to get that $234 fare now and then add to it. It looks like the peak of spring break will be March 5 through 24. In that case your return will be outside of spring break. The dates will narrow down of course when we get closer, as it does every year.

      Aloha.

  22. Hi! This website is awesome! I am looking into a flight from ATL the last week of September to Honolulu. There are good flights with good connecting flights available from $820. I feel that is a decent price, but I am scared to bite the bullet a little too early. Would you recommend I wait to buy the tickets? If so, when? Or bite the bullet? Thank you so much for your help!!

    1. Hi Kamaryn,

Thank you! Yes it might a little better if you wait. Unless there’s an unusual fare sale, the price will be up to $100 less than the current price. When there’s a real sale (which is very infrequent – last time was August, it can be as low as $500’s. As to when prices might decline – between may and August. Hope that helps and let us know how it works out.

      Aloha.

  23. Hi,
I am traveling to Maui from LAX this coming December (15-22) wth my family; prices right now are $687; should I get them now or maybe wait till they go down?

  24. Hello,
I would love to have your advice on booking flights in first class. I would like to travel from New York to Hawaii during September 3 to the 10. Right now the tickets at Delta are above $2,000 round trip, 1 stop. Shall I wait and expect for this tickets in first class to go lower than current prices? Do you think flights will drop as we get closer or that rate is about the lowest it will go for this year? Thanks so much!

    1. Hi Cesar,

1st class doesn’t vary much so it is doubtful it will improve. Upgrading using credit card/airline frequent flyer points would definitely be cheaper if that’s available. We see prices starting (to HNL) at about $1,800 for your dates.

      Aloha.

  25. Hi,

We are traveling to Kauai Sept 20, 2016 from Sacramento. Hawaiian Airlines $628, buy now or wait?

    Thanks in advance, Christina

    1. Hi Christina,

Looks like it should improve by up to $100 if you wait. Availability won’t be an issue to have patience. Also, Oakland should be about $75 less than SMF.

      Aloha.

  26. Hi,
I am flying to Kona from SJC or SFO on August 3, 2016 and would like to know when I should buy my tickets for the best price. Any suggestions?

    1. Hi Leslie,

When to buy for all dates is already in the article. Looks like high $500’s and not likely to improve.

      Aloha.

  27. Hello! I’m finding lots of great info on your site! My sister and I are trying to book a trip from either Dallas, TX or Houston, TX to either Honolulu or Maui. I’ve looked around and the lowest price I’ve found is near $800. Any ideas on how to get a less expensive flight? I considered maybe flying somewhere on the West coast and flying to Hawaii from there, but not sure how much we’d save by doing that. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

    1. Hi Regina.

Thanks. Doing intermediate stops is problematic and not recommended. There are $513 RT fares this spring to Maui on Virgin America with only a brief connection. And for fall the best prices are $629 on Alaska, also with a brief connecting stop. Those are both good prices.

      Aloha.

  28. Watching for flights to HNL from San Francisco Bay area on a weekend mid-November and flying back to Las Vegas from HNL end of the month on a weekday. So far the fares are around $1,100 for the two legs. In your opinion, should I wait for some lower fares, even though it is around Thanksgiving? First trip to Hawaii and wondering what to expect for fares.

    1. Hi Kathy.

$592 on Hawaiian – depending on your exact November dates. Not bad for that itinerary. Your concern about being near Thanksgiving is valid and might indicate buying sooner might be best.

      Aloha.

        1. Hi Kathy,

As indicated in the post, if anything does materialize, which we question, it will be after mediation and arbitration. You’re fine.

          Aloha.

  29. We are planning a trip from pdx to ogg departing on June 29th 2016 and returning on July 6th 2016. What can I expect fares to be and when is a good time to purchase tickets?

    1. Hi Kathleen,

That is the most in demand week of summer so suggest buying immediately. From about $600 to $700 depending on stops and carrier. That price is reasonable.

      Aloha.

  30. Hello,

I am planning on traveling to Maui from Chicago during the first or second week of October. Tickets are running close to 1,000 right now. Is it better to wait it out for a month? Thank you!

    1. Hi Lisa,

Fares are available from $780 with good connections on multiple airlines. No harm in waiting. Saying one month may not cover it however as better fares for fall may come until much later than that.

      Aloha.

  31. I am taking my two children on holiday this year and our first choice is Hawaii – Kauai to be exact. We will be departing Los Angeles (LAX) on June 7th and returning on June 20th. Our main reason for visiting is family, and holiday. My children’s father is Hawaiian and they have never been (single mom and only my income – tax refund being used for this journey and it’s not enough for $700+ tickets and $$ to enjoy the island). Luckily we have family to stay with so a good deal on airfare is the focus. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Enjoy your long weekend and happy tax day 🙂
    Mahalo,

    Jackie (Keali’i and Hoku) Kern

    1. Hi Jackie,

Looks like $784 per person. Not likely to improve unfortunately but probably won’t get worse either if you decide to wait and see.

      Aloha.

  32. Aloha!

I love your website! It has been soooo very helpful with information on travel tips and fares.
I will never book a Hawaiian trip without consulting your website first. Because of you, in December 2014 I was able to snag a great deal on a round trip flight from SJC to OGG + LIH to SJC for $317 all taxes & fees included. That was for travel in January 2015. I had to forego this year’s deal which I saw for $278 (before taxes and fees) because I was not able to travel during the time frame. I want to go back to Maui in January 2017. What are the chances for another great deal for airfare then? I will definitely be looking for your alerts. Thank you so very much for offering this service. And I am glad that I live on the West Coast and benefit from the competitive routes. Mahalo nui loa!

    1. Hi Nan.

Thanks very much! The fares this past January were unexpectedly low. It’s hard to predict if that will happen again. Generally speaking, the west coast to Hawaii markets are somewhat shaken up by the recent industry changes as well as those that are anticipated. So we’re optimistic.

      Aloha.

      1. Thank you! I will share your optimism….looking forward to Maui/Kauai in January/February 2017! Love getting your emails. This year, in June, I’m using Alaska Air miles for Oahu. I’ll have to research your website for tips. It’s been 10 years since I last visited Oahu.

  33. We’re going to Maui, Sept 10th- 17th, Alaska airlines has the best nonstop flights, just not sure if prices will drop, or should we buy now? San Diego or LAX to OGG at 583.00 nonstop. That price is San Diego

    1. We are hoping to fly to Oahu (but can manage Honolulu, too) from the southeast (Nashville, Atlanta, etc) anytime in October, 2016 but prefer not to fly overnight if possible. What would you recommend and if overnight flight saves a bunch, we could do it, just not preferable as there are 3 of us (1 child) going to visit our son stationed in Oahu and trying to see him before he’s sent out in December. Thanks so very much for any helpful info. you can provide

      1. Hi Jill,

Honolulu is the only Oahu airport. Fares are quite high for fall from either city (nearly $1,000 with a good daytime connection) so it would be best to look again this summer, as indicated in article.

        Aloha.

  34. Hi,

We will be traveling to Maui from LAX on July 24, 2016 for one week (returning on July 31, 2016). I was shocked to find the air fare being so expensive, around $800 per person round trip (nonstop both ways). Do you think the air fare will likely drop in May? Or due to high season in July, the air fare would just stay pretty much the same?

Thank you very much for any inputs!
    Angela

    1. Hi Angela.

Tough call. Normally we’d say it won’t improve for those dates but LA is in an unusual position. So it could break either way. It won’t go up, but availability might be an issue if you wait. On the other hand price might come down somewhat.

      Aloha.

  35. Hello,
I would love to have your advice on booking flights. My husband and I want to take a trip in early to late September 2016 from Baltimore (BWI) to Maui. The cheapest flights so far have been around the upper $700’s. We could even wait until Oct. Do you think flights will drop as we get closer or that rate is about the lowest it will go for this year? I would appreciate any advice you could give. Thanks so much!

    Take care,
    Jeanine

    1. Hi Jeanine,

Please wait. Looks like you could get as low as $600 or even mid-$500’s. Availability won’t be an issue so do not panic.

      Aloha.

  36. Hello!
My girlfriend and I are planning on going to visit Hawaii in the summer of 2017. I’ve read this post and this has been the MOST helpful in our search! But I do have a few questions. Which airline would be the cheapest? We live in Louisville KY and are planning to visit a cheaper island (Oahu) and when would be the best time to purchase tickets? (The cheaper the better) Thanks in advance!

    1. Hi Destiny,

Thank you! Either Maui or Oahu price best. Get a hold of these guidebooks to help you decide. Hawaii Revealed.
As far as airlines and prices go, you’ll need to check later this summer if you’re traveling before mid-August 2017. If it is after, then you should wait until at least early 2017 to see what prices are.

      Aloha.

  37. Aloha!
My hubby and I are looking to go to Maui from
    August 21, 2016 – August 28, 2016 and looking to see
when it’s best to purchase tickets? and from what airport-
    Los Angeles or San Diego??

    MAHALO!

    1. Hi Reeny,

Looks best out of SAN at this point. Just over $500 for your dates or save $100 if you can go and return one day later.

      Aloha.

  38. Husband and I are going to Kauai and Oahu the last of October and First of November, 2016. Our nearest airport is Pittsburgh, PA. Would it be to our benefit to make flight bookings in two separate destinations (i.e. Pittsburgh to San Francisco and San Francisco to Kauai)in lieu of Pittsburgh to Kauai directly.

Any chance rates will lower and when would be the best time to book flihts. Thank you.

    1. Hi Becky,

Intermediate stops without a true stopover can be problematic in terms of luggage, security, missed flights. Looks like that will be about $900 unless something happens to improve it. Would definitely wait given your off season low demand dates. Maybe by mid-summer.

      Aloha.

    1. I was going to fly from Boston to Maui then onto Honalulu and back to Boston in mid September $1014 should I buy or wait?
      Thanks

      1. Hi Brian.

If you want the fastest connection, that is the current price (though it could improve by waiting). There are Fares from high $600’s for longer connections. Suggest checking Virgin America.

        Aloha.
