  1. Aloha! My family is going to Kauai January 1-8, 2017. Cheapest non-stop flights from San Jose to Lihue on Alaska are about $800…..does that sound about right to you? It seems like flying to Kauai is a bit more expensive than the other islands but I wanted to double check with a professional 🙂 Thank you so much for your time!

    1. Hi Karen,

$630 on your dates nonstop. If you have any flexibility, then 1/3-1/9 for example saves over $100. Yes Kauai is running higher, for about another year until new planes arrive.

      Aloha.

  2. Hi! Thanks for having such an informative website! It has really been a great resource! My family of 5 is planning our first visit to Hawaii (flying from Atlanta) for May 2017. Our ideal travel dates our May 20th though the 28th. I am tracking flights flying into OGG and out of LIH because we want to see Maui and Kauai. Right now, these are running $745. Since we need 5 seats ( 2 adults, 3 kids) I am wondering if we should go ahead and book these flights because the price is decent ( as are the flight times/layovers….) I guess I would rather go ahead and lock these down unless there will be a decently significant price drop.

Again, thank you for any knowledge. I hope that the weather of the last few days has not been too awful!

    1. Hi Holly.

Thank you. Concur that is a good price, and suggest buying. Waiting and watching isn’t really fun so you’ll be glad to move on to trip planning instead of fare watching.

      Happy Labor Day.

      Aloha.

  3. Flying out of MSP to HNL. Non-stop with delta $500 per person for mid November 2016. To good of a deal to pass up or is $500 the new normal?

  4. Not sure if you’re able to offer comments on flight prices from Canada to Hawaii! Looking to travel from Vancouver (YVR) to OGG Nov 10-18. Prices on Delta were about at ~$420 and it went up a bit to $473 in the last few days.

Do you see any wiggle room for the prices to come back down? Or is it a case of once the lower fares are gone, they’re gone…

  5. Want to fly out of DFW the first two weeks in November. When is the best time to buy and what are the bests routes to fly first class? We want to go to two Islands – Kaui and Kona. Also, which island is it better to fly into first? Not looking to party or be in a real touristy area either.

  6. My wife and I are traveling to Honolulu from Lexington, KY from 1/20/17 to 1/30/17. Looking at flights from Lexington and Cincinnati, it appears the best rates are ~$940-$960 round trip with 1-2 stops.

Are those rates about what we should expect to pay or should we wait a month or two to purchase? Thank you for your time.

  7. Good Evening

I already have flights for Nov 27th to Dec 8th to Maui. Our son is looking to come around the Dec 1st till the 10th.
He would like to fly out of BLI to OGG. The flights have gone up and down a little, he is a little flexible.
Do you see them changing much more.

Thank you so much for this site I have found so much useful information

    Eileen

    1. Hi Eileen.

Thank you. There’s no non-stop on Dec 1, it would have to be the day before. $438 RT. Fair price albeit not as heavily discounted as it once once. Not sure it will improve – it’s possible. Probably no harm in waiting, except that with limited BLI flights, you could have to change to Seattle.

      Aloha.

  8. Hi there! Great and helpful site! I’m flying to Kauai for a friend’s wedding in October (10/14- 17) afterward will be jumping over the the Big Island for a few days (10/17-20) and will be flying in and out of Oakland, Ca. Would you suggest booking now or holding out for lower fares. The cheapest for the whole trip I’m able to find right now is $700. Not sure if that’s normal or not. Thanks!

    1. Hi Lisa,

There are $498 RT airfares between Oakland and Lihue. Not sure from your comment if that’s what you’re looking for. Inter-island pricing is largely time of day/day of week dependent. That could improve if you wait, maybe by up to $50 or so. No guarantee of course that it will but availability should not be an issue. Also, San Jose is running about $50 cheaper.

      Aloha.

  9. We want to fly out of Minneapolis the middle or end of February 2017, for 2 weeks.
Any advice on when to buy?
    Thanks!!

    1. Hi Robyn,

No indication on how long you’ll have to wait. It’s all based on supply and demand that materializes between now and then. Target price is $500 with a good connection.

      Aloha.

        1. Hi Robyn.

There could be those Thanksgiving deals on hotels – but don’t expect anything out of the ordinary really. More hype than substance is likely. Regarding airlines, we don’t expect anything.

          Aloha.

  10. Hello From Utah,

8 Adults traveling from SLC, Utah to HNL- Honolulu. We traveled last year and got a killer deal on airfare $395.00 per person. Now we want to travel January 26th through Feb 4th 2017. The cheapest we are getting is around $600. Seems high to me. Do you think prices will be coming down? I am thinking (like me) that because of Zika, it is making people reconsider where they are going for vacations and right now Hawaii is still clean.
    THANKS for your help.

    Hold or Buy.

    1. Hi Robert.

Seems like prices have room to come down. Would wait and target high $400’s.

      Aloha.

  11. Thanks so much for providing such great information! Family of 4 looking to go from LAX to KONA Thursday 3/23/17 to Monday 4/3/17. Found $630 R/T and non-stop. Seems like a reasonable rate for peak spring break but I would appreciate your opinion on that price.
    Thanks!
    Gerry

    1. Hi Gerry,

Thank you. $616 at the moment on United nonstop. Concur that’s a good price for your spring break dates.

      Aloha.

    1. Hi Aubrey.

That is what the post is all about – including cheapest time to buy and cheapest time to travel. Fall and spring travel.

      Aloha.

  12. Hi,
My family of 5 (3 children under 9) would like to travel to Hawaii possibly in May or June 2017. What is going to be the cheapest flight for us and when should I look to start booking airfare from Minneapolis, MN.

  13. Love this website!! Thank you for your hard work.

I am looking to go to Kauai (LIH), on 9/18/16 to 9/24/16 from LAX. Prices have been fluctuating over the past month. Currently, it is $806 RT but I saw it at $659 RT back in July. Should I book now or perhaps wait a little more? Kayak says to wait.

    1. Hi Peter.

Thank you. Suggest waiting with one caveat. Your dates are weekends and those are most often excluded from better pricing. $764 on your exact dates or $626 if you can return two days later.

      Aloha.

  14. We are looking for a nonstop from Houston to Honolulu on Feb 20th and leaving on the 27th 2017 for our honeymoon. I’ve been looking at United first class, since it’s our honeymoon and it’s about $1700/person round trip. When do you feel I should try booking, so that I’ll be able to get a better deal?

    Aloha,

    Anthony

    1. Hi Anthony.

The first class fare doesn’t vary much (perhaps up to $100) so you’re probably good to go ahead and book it now.

      Aloha.

  15. Thanks so much for your website, I love your email updates too!
Looking to book pdx-hnl Nov 4-12, maybe flexible with dates. I have an app that has been telling me to wait (hopper) and then kayak tells me to buy…I feel like prices should go down a bit, but maybe that’s because I’ve purchased flights to Hawaii in the past in the high 300s- lower 400s. Do I need to embrace the $500+ as “the new normal”? I see east coast prices $1000+ so I know it could be worse for us, but I dont know what price I should feel good about. Mahalo, Lisa

    1. Hi Lisa,

Thank you! As you can see here, last week Hawaiian Air had that route priced at $426. It will probably return again. Your Saturday flight however won’t get that price. You’ll almost definitely need to fly mid-week.

      Hang in there.

      Aloha.

      1. Thanks for the encouragement! I missed the low Hawaiian fare, and it looks like your link refers to PHX(Phoenix) rather than PDX(Portland)to HNL…

  16. Hello! Thank you for this very helpful site! My husband and I are wanting to plan a trip to Hawaii in February 2017 and stay at one of the hotels on Waikiki beach. Is this a good time concerning weather, availability and prices to visit Hawaii? Also, what would be a good target price and airline if we are flying out of SLC? Any information is appreciated!

    Thank you so much!!
    Patti

    1. Hi Patti,

First, target price is just under $500 with one stop and maybe $75 more nonstop. Delta and Alaska are the best bets.

February is winter, and so storms are a definite possibility. Days will be in the high 70’s to low 80’s, and nights in the 60’s. It should be a good time in terms of pricing of accommodations. Hope that helps.

      Aloha.

  17. I am traveling from LAS to Kona on 12/12/16 and flying back on 12/18/16. Do you think prices will drop for that travel period? Thanks for any advise and your service

    1. Hi Jeff

Doesn’t look like to come down by much if at all on that route for your dates. If you do 12/13-12/19, you’d save $50 as you would if you do 2-stops.

      Aloha.

  18. Hi! Thank you for your informative emails! We’re leaving for Honolulu, Hawaii (from SLC) until March 23, 2017, and I’m anxious to get the best flight for our family of 5. Can you please help me? I checked a few months ago and the flights were running about $686 round trip right now at the cheapest (going and coming back on weekdays). Now they’re about $789 at the cheapest. Did I miss the best time to buy? Do you think they’ll get any better? How much would you guess I could save if we drove to the west coast? Oh thank you for your help! You guys are great!

    1. Hi Anne,

Thank you. You’re traveling in spring break which is why prices are so high. Nonstop is running about $900. Mixed airlines (use an OTA to check those) yields prices starting at $700. If you want to drive to the west coast, there are still fares of $428 from SJC on Hawaiian. Hope that helps.

      Aloha.

  19. Hello we are a family of 5, 2 adults, 1 12yr old and 2 9yr olds, time of year doesn’t matter for us, when would be the cheapest time to fly out? We want to go for about a week 7nights 8days, leaving from SMF, thank you.

    1. Hi Daniel.

Cheapest time is fall and spring, per dates listed in the post. For example Maui is about $460 through both periods. Might come down by a bit if you wait, but might not. Fair price. Otherwise you’re stuck driving to OAK or SJC.

      Aloha.

  20. Hi. Looking to travel Feb 28-Mar 9, 2017 from the San Francisco Bay Area to Honolulu. Currently R/T prices are $418. Good buy, or should I wait for sub $400 deals?

  21. Hi, my friends and I are planning to visit Maui this November. Right now airfare is running $659/RT. I’m wondering if I should buy the tickets now or wait to see if they drop any lower? I’m just curious if this is a good deal or not. We’ll be flying out from Minneapolis, MN.

    Thanks in advance!
    -Jenna

    1. Hi Jenna,

Just saw some under $550 RT fares with fast connection on Alaska starting the last week of November and returning until mid-December. As good as you can hope for.

      Aloha.

  22. Hi…my family wants to go to Hawaii during the week of Thanksgiving…probably the most expensive week of the year! Should I purchase flight tickets now or should I wait until late-September? Thanks in advance!

    1. Hi Yohan.

You didn’t indicate route so we can’t check specifics. Thanksgiving weekend to weekend dates won’t have deals so that is best bought now.

      Aloha.

  23. Hello! We have just been invited to Hawaii over the Christmas holidays. I was wondering if I should wait a few months to book our tickets? Our dates will be departing LAX on December 26th 2016 to HNL and returning on January 2nd 2017. At the moment I can see $1079 RT per person. Do you think airfares will get any cheaper a few months out from our dates?
    Love your website!
    Thanks,
    Lisa

    1. Hi Lisa,

Thank you! Yes $1,072 on your dates with Virgin America. Not very likely that will improve, but it’s possible as is lack of availability. That’s how it goes at the holidays. But, if you are able to adjust by one or two days, then the price drops significantly. December 28 through January 4 is $700 on Hawaiian.

      Aloha.

  24. Love your website, email notifications, articles and hawaii revealed books! Since we’ve set our sights on going to Hawaii for our honeymoon in April 2017, I’ve been doing serious research and using all of your suggestions for guidance. I have a few questions…

My fiancé and I would be departing from New Jersey on the east coast and are looking to spend 10-14 days… Visiting Maui first to catch the end of the whale watching season and then spend the other half on the Big Island. We’d be staying in resorts on the west coast of both islands. Would be flying out either the April 3rd or 4th in 2017.

    1. What is the best pricing for flights I can expect to get since we’re flying from the east coast? We’ve started looking and it seems the flights are $1000-$1100 right now.

    2. Any airlines I should focus on and watch in particular for the best probable pricing?

    3. I’m confused how to arrange a RT flight into Maui and leave from the Big Island.

Any help and guidance would be much appreciated!

We’ve been researching all sorts of day trips and excursions using your books. They’re amazing when trying to plan and get insight so thank you so much!!!

    Dawn

    1. Hi Dawn.

      Thanks so much!

United seems to have the fastest connections from EWR. Flying into OGG and out of KOA, we’re seeing $957, which isn’t bad. Price varies by duration of flights/layover. The faster it is, the higher the price. But it was quite speedy at that price. Then you can just book your Hawaiian Airlines inter-island flight separately. Book that soon after making the primary reservations.

You can choose to wait but gut call is that the price won’t change substantially if you book now or later. Hope that helps. If there’s anything else we can help with, just ask.

Sounds like you’re in for a great honeymoon.

      Aloha.

  25. Going from Houston ,TX to Kauai HI from Feb 9 to 19 2017. Any suggestion for a great deal. Right now I see some flights mid 800.00 to low 900.00. However if I could manage a round trip from SFO or LAX then book round trip from HI to get me there and back, Im thinking I could get a better deal.

    1. Hi Beverly.

Intermediate stops don’t work well in terms of baggage, security and even price. For your dates best price is just under $900 on Alaska with very good connection. If you can adjust by one day price drops by $65. Doubtful that it will improve much for your dates, and typically lowest on that route is close to $700.

      Aloha.

  26. Hello,

I am looking to travel from April 12 or 13, to April 16, 2017 from NYC, JFK airport to Hawaii (not sure what part yet). Can you please help me with informing me of when is the best time to book, what airline has the best prices and what should I expect to pay for round trip per person? Myself, my fiancé and our son will be going. Thank you very much in advance.

    1. Hi Towanna,

Probably best at this point to watch with us and we’ll see what the deals are and which airline is offering them. This fall will probably be the time to book, but best deals could even come later – like early 2017. Target airfare $700.

      Aloha.

  27. Hii good evening ,
I was just wondering if there are trips from Kuwait City to Hawaii ?
    Thank you 🙂

    1. Hi Razan.

Not really sure what you are asking. If you’re asking for specific deals on that route, the answer is no.

      Aloha.

  28. I just found your website and love it! We are a family of 5, coming from Houston, Texas and would love to visit Kauai next summer, if our budget allows. Any recommendations on what is the best month to start looking for deals? Unfortunately, due to the kids school schedules we are limited to somewhere between beginning of June thru mid July. We can be flexible as far as weekday departures and would be willing to drive to Dallas to fly out of, if a significant difference in price. Also, we do have relatives in San Diego and Portland, so if flights cheaper to book from there, I could probably find good airfare deals on a separate airline from Houston to one of those locations, if that would be the better route to go. Any advice is most appreciated! I did sign up for email alerts from your sight.

    Thank you again!
    Kelli

    1. Hi Kelli,

Thank you. Unfortunately bad news on your hopes. Fares next summer after June 8 will run $1,000-$1,150, largely depending on how long it takes. Fastest routing costs the most. There will be no deals and it is best to buy as soon as possible in terms of availability. Dallas is running somewhat cheaper – but still starting in $900’s with long duration, if that helps. Routing via west coast probably will not help either.

      Aloha.

  29. Thanks for a great website! Just stumbled across it while trying to figure out the best time to purchase tickets for JUNE 2017. We will be flying from SanDiego on June 12 RT Honolulu with a return of July 5. On the Hawaiian Air website, the nonstop extra comfort seats are $758.01. Is that a good deal? Also, 1st class is listed as $1266.21, but if I select the extra comfort seats in a mock booking they offer me the 1st class for an additional $254.10. That would make the upgrade to 1st class cheaper than the 1st class price listed on the main screen. Your thoughts? and should I book or wait? Many thanks
    Jon

    1. Hi Jon.

Definitely suggest buying now for peak summer travel. On checking we’re getting somewhat different pricing. About $600 RT, which is really good. Plus either extra comfort or first class upgrade, either of which is a great plan.

      Aloha.

  30. Aloha!
My family would like to visit Maui between Sept 17-23. Who has the best flight rates and when is the best day to fly from San Diego, Ca?

    Mahalo,
    Chris

    1. Hi Chris,

Best deal for those dates is $562 on Alaska nonstop. You’ll pay a premium of up to $100 for weekend travel nonstop vs. midweek with stop.

      Aloha.

  31. Leaving from LAX to OGG Maui on Jan 2-Jan12, 2016. I’ve been seeing averages of $495-$510, will it get lower closer to Jan? Thsnks

    1. Hi Ed.

Doesn’t look like it will get much lower. That seems to be where it is settling. Suggest buying.

      Aloha.

  32. My wife and I will be in Maui Feb 21 – Mar 4 and plan to take day trips to Honolulu and the Big Island. How far in advance should we book those flights to maximize availability and minimize costs? Thanks.

    1. Hi Frank.

If you’re planning to be away all day that may help as the earliest and latest flights tend to be less costly. It wouldn’t hurt to buy these sooner than later inasmuch as the sale prices don’t save you a huge amount in comparison to the convenience of having what you need set in advance.

      Aloha.

  33. Hello! Thank you for your Awesome sight. I have been looking for airfare but have not seen it come down. Looking to visit Oahu Oct 15-23, 201 from SLC, UT to Honolulu. I know it is weekend travel but it is the only way we can go. I am down to the deadline. Do you think airfare will come down at all? If so what do you think I should be planning on paying?

    Thank you for your help!

    Nicole

    1. Hi Nicole.

Thank you. Not very good prices generally out of SLC at this time unfortunately. Weekends are about $120 or so worse yet. Nonstop is also at a premium. Not sure that it will improve or that is worth waiting.

      Aloha.

  34. Looking to spend 10 nights on Kauai in Sept 2017 for our 20 yr anniversary. We’ve been twice before, but its been a dozen years since our last visit. Wondering your thoughts about when to start looking to book a package deal. Also, I’ve found its hard to find anything that will incorporate a first class ticket. Any suggestions? Can leave from Jacksonville or Orlando. Thank you very much!

    1. Hi Mike.

We don’t monitor packages. Also not sure there is really any savings to be found with them. Perhaps more convenience but it might work out better to just do the research and put it all together. Orlando is usually cheaper than Jacksonville and September is certainly better than summer – price wise. And there aren’t deals on first class, but perhaps some seasonal fluctuations. You should be looking in early 2017 for air and you might start now for accommodations. The most popular vacation rentals on Kauai sell out very far in advance. Lastly suggest the Kauai Revealed guidebook if you don’t have a current version already. Most helpful.

      Aloha.

  35. Hello, I am planning a graduation trip June 15-22,2017 departure from Sacramento CA. I have found RT flights on Alaskan and Hawaiian for around $700-800 per person. Should I wait or book? Thank you, Melanie

  36. Hi,
I love your website! So much information, thank you!

My husband and I are taking the kids to Aulani. We are looking to go late February. Could push it out a little into March – so basically somewhere between February 20- March 3rd. We want to stay 5-6 nights. We are flying from Portland, Oregon. Right now Hawaiian Air and Alaska prices are about $475- $494. Right now I am flexible in terms of what day to fly out on (I haven’t booked our room yet). What is your experience should we try to fly out on a Monday (that would make our return Sunday)? Or another combo? Also, it seems like from what you have said on your site that prices should come down a little further. When do you recommend I buy the tickets? Thanks for all your help!

    1. Hi Juile.

Thank you. How about 2/23 through 3/1 or 3/2. $428 on Alaska. Good price for that route. If that works suggest buying now since that route isn’t seeing anything better than that.

      Aloha.

  37. Hi, We are currently booked to visit Kauai from Nov3 – 15. We wish to leave from Detroit. Best prices I have seen over the past 4 months was like 875 with delta. Last week they (delta) was at 915 and fluctuate daily/weekly anywhere from 1000 – 915. I have also been looking at American air and US air. I have haerd there are usually fall deals but time is burning and our departure date is getting closer. Should I buy our flights now or wait for these fall deals? Any other advice you can offer is much appreciated.

    mahalo

    Darcy

    1. Hi Darcy,

About $750 to $1,000 right now largely depending on duration. Might come down if you wait, and would suggest doing so. Availability will not be an issue for your mid-week, off season dates.

      Aloha.

  38. Hi,

Going to Hawaii has be e n a desire of mine for years. I am 57 years old and I do intend to make this happen for me and my husband.

Could you please tell me the most affordable islands to visit and the be best time to get flight out of Houston Intercontinental?

I would be interested in any information you can give me.

    Thank you for your help.

    1. Hi Sharon.

The post you are commenting on has all of the most updated information specifically on the questions you’re asking. Regarding Houston, fares are mostly about $750 when it isn’t peak season. We do see rare sales from time to time, so suggest you stand by and we’ll definitely publish those when they’re out. Target price in the $500’s.

      Aloha.

  39. Hi! My fiance and I are wanting to take a late honeymoon/1st anniversary trip to Hawaii. We are unsure which island, but we have plently of time to decide on that. Because we are looking at going sometime in September of 2017. But are open to any other dates that provide a better deal. (Your opinions on cheaper dates and better islands would be greatly appreciated.) We can fly out of the followinf cities: Charleston(WV), Huntington(WV), Columbus(OH), Cincinnati(OH), Durham-Raleigh(NC), or Charlotte(NC). Any and all information you have on having a fun filled hawaiian vacation on a budget would be awesome! Thanks in advance for your advice!
    -Chelsea

    1. Hi Chelsea,

September is ideal in Hawaii in terms of everything including price, availability and weather. You won’t want to book very far in advance since it is off season. Start checking prices in the spring or summer. Charlotte has the best prices generally, in terms of possible departure airports.

      Aloha.
