  1. Hello- I am planning a trip to Maui from Louisville, KY sometime in 2017. Can you tell me what months are the least expensive and when is the best time to book? Thanks!

    1. Hi Abby,

Those answers are all contained in the 7 posts that make up this Cheapest Time to Fly topic. In a nutshell, now through May other than mid-March through mid-April and after Labor Day. For those periods typically best to buy about 3-4 months ahead, but that is a generalization and doesn’t always hold true.

      Aloha.

  2. We are looking to fly from St. Louis to Honolulu either in early June or late June/early July. When is the best time to purchase the airline tickets and about how much can I expect to spend?

    1. Hi Tracy,

As is indicated in post, we will move to peak summer season after the first week of June. Anything in that time period is best bought now. If you’re concluding your vacation before about June 8, you could try waiting to see if better pricing becomes available. Pricing at the moment is about $770 RT including mid-summer, which is actually excellent for that route.

      Aloha.

  3. Hi im looking for a summer trip to hawaii for me and some friends out of denver or taking a cheap flight to san diego or san fran then flying to maui. I cant seem to find anything less than $750 round trip. Any suggestions?

    1. Hi Derek,

Prices starting in high $800’s during summer from Denver. San Jose to Maui starts low $500’s during summer. With cost of flying to San Jose, not sure that helps very much. No other suggestions.

      Aloha.

  4. I’m planning a trip to Oahu the last week in May… When should I bookl? Should I of already done it?
    Thanks!

    1. Hi Charlene.

Not time yet – current fare sales are largely for pre-spring break. Stay tuned.

      Aloha.

      1. When would be the best time to start searching prices for the last week of May? I am also heading to Ohau on that week. Thank you

        1. Hi Cristina.

At this point true “sales” have been through mid-March, with some good prices through May. We’ll have post-spring break sales coming in the next 1-2 months.

          Aloha.

  5. Greetings –
I saw non stop flights available in October 2016 from CVG to OGG.
I do not see any for 2017? Will they appear later or has something changed.

    Thank you. Martin.

    1. Hi Martin.

There are no nonstops between CVG and any Hawaii airport. Not sure there ever were any.

      Aloha.

      1. Thank you – I am seeing prices of $711 CVG to OGG in October 2017. That seems pretty good. Can we expect prices to improve as October gets closer. Thank you – Martin

        1. Hi Martin.

Typically about $700 is lowest we see on that route. Could be an exception, but it is bird in hand vs. one in the bush. Definitely not a bad deal.

          Aloha.

  6. Trying to plan a week December 2017 trip to Hawaii – all area’s open really and we will be traveling from the Philadelphia Airport. Any suggestions when i should start looking at flights and what island might be a cheaper place to fly into?

    Thank you so much

    1. Hi Kelly,

Big difference is if you’re trip is being completed within first two weeks or not. If so, then wait to buy in summer perhaps. If for high season, buy as soon as available. Airport may not really make much difference in price so suggest going with where you want to spend time.

      Aloha.

  7. Hey everyone! I am not sure where all of you are located, but here in the south (South Carolina) prices from Atlanta are very reasonable right now. For a long stay in Kauai from June to July it is only $605 a ticket with one stop on AA. Some of the lowest prices I have seen for a while and to Kauai none the less!

  8. Hi There!

Planning our honeymoon for July of 2017 out of Las Vegas and I am not sure when I should buy our airline ticekts. It makes me a little nervous to wait and bundle that up with the hotel as I would like to have the hotel booked sooner but I am hearing it might be cheaper. What do you suggest? And should I look for flights that fly into a different city on the island? Im getting so much conflicted info.

    Please advise.

    1. Hi Jen.

Our suggestions are already there. For July buy everything (air, accommodations, car) now. Unless you feel like driving to San Diego or something, just pay to fly from Las Vegas. Even San Diego won’t save enough to warrant the time and expense.

      Aloha.

  9. Hello,

Great site–thanks for all the info! I’m planning my first trip to Maui with my fiancé in Septemeber 2017 (first week). Would it be crazy to book now for airfare? It seems very expensive–about $1700 for both of us round trip. Any idea if they will (hopefully) decrease in price in the upcoming months?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Jaime.

Yes, as indicated in the post, it is too early. And prices will subside overall for travel dates after mid-August.

      Aloha.

  10. Aloha, enjoy your site. We have been traveling from Denver to Maui the 1st week in June to catch the tail end of low season for the last 5 years and have been paying about $725 round trip and typically buy around this time. With current oil pricing and new carriers I was expecting to see prices equal or less than $725. Resent searches have resulted in $900 to 1000 fares. Do you forecast $700 fares from DEN to OGG for last week May to 1st week June in 2017? Thanks Mike

    1. Hi Mike.

It looks like May to very early June will still come down somewhat. You can expect fares starting in low to mid $600’s with one stop and in $900’s on the nonstop.

      Aloha.

  11. We are flying to Kauai in March 2017. We usually travel to Hawaii every 6 months or so. The airfare from San Diego to Kauai is seemingly more expensive 792 RT than any other time we have flown before including summer months on Hawaiian airlines. Are there any events going on in March I don’t know of?

    1. Hi Stephanie.

Yes – it is spring break. However we see fares as low as $398 RT in the first half of March, on Alaska nonstop.

      Aloha.

  12. Hi! er… Aloha!
I am looking to visit Haleakala National Park next year… I am visiting for a personal reason and wanted to go at the beginning of August for my mothers birthday. Do you think it would be wise to travel around that time or when do you think would be the fairest time to fly to Hawaii from Arkansas. I would even be willing to travel from Tulsa, OK or Houston, TX since I have family there.

    Cheers!

  13. My husband and I are hoping to fly from Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Honolulu on 8/31/17 and returning on 9/9/17. Flights with our preferred time of day and 1 stop on the way there, with 2 stops on the way home, are currently around $1000. Is it likely this price will drop at all? Is there a certain time of year that we should expect these prices might start to increase? I am just wondering how soon in advance to book.
    Thanks!

    1. Hi EO.

Not likely to improve. If you want to pay less you’d need to not fly on Saturday and have longer duration. Another options is MSP which could be up to $400 less.

      Aloha.

    2. Hello. My husband and I are looking to book a flight in mid march 2017 from JFK to OGG and wondering when you think the best time to book is? Flights seem to be averaging $900-1,000 currently. Do you expect the fares to drop as the date approaches? It looks like flights are lower in Jan and feb, is that due to the season or is 40-50 days out the “sweet spot” for booking flights?
      Thanks!

      1. Hi Jeanine.

The issue is spring break which is impacting the second half of March. Might or might not improve, but that isn’t likely. You can save a couple of hundred dollars (perhaps more during a sale) either before or after.

        Aloha.

        Aloha.

  14. Hi there! My fiance and I are planning a destination wedding in the Big Island towards the 2nd half of next year. We just came back from a wedding in the Big Island during Thanksgiving and as expected the fare was incredibly high. I’m looking to see which months airfares are the cheapest from NYC to Kona. 90% of the guests are coming from NYC and we’re somewhat flexible as to the wedding date in order to afford cheaper airfare for the guests. Thanks!

    1. Hi Caryl.

Not so much determined by month, but rather season, with fall and spring the least expensive times. Also winter before spring break. Then it just depends on how much the airlines want to discount that route. Best hope is just over $700 RT.

      Aloha.

  15. Hi

Our family is going to Maui leaving PDX around Jan 7th 2018. What should I bring looking for in fares?

    Thanks

    Mark

  16. Hello,

my husband and I finally going to Maui, after a LOT of searching we decide to go this December, but I am little concern about the weather
We are flying from Ottawa, ON…. so the last thing I need in my vacation is rain, do you think we should go a head and buy the tickets or it’s not worth spending all this money to stay in the hotel room most of the time

    1. Hi Faten.

There’s simply no way to know. But having said that, the holidays are one of the most popular times to be in Hawaii, and we 1) aren’t going anywhere else and 2) plan to spend most of the time off outdoors, hiking and swimming.

      Aloha.

  17. Prices from LA to Honolulu ridiculously high in my opinion at this time… I’ve tried April dates, June dates, July dates… everything is around $700/person or higher. For that price – or even lower in many cases – we can fly to most Western European cities. These crazy high prices LA to Honolulu are not justified. I’m not the sucker to pay an idiotic price for this… We’ve traveled on the same route in August 2014 and the price was less than $500/person. Considering the fact that the oil price was much higher back then, it adds to the fact that the current prices are insane. So it will be a “No, thanks” from me and my family… as long as the prices are so high, we’ll travel to Europe instead.

    1. Hi Ovi.

First half of April, and June/July are high season and have been $700+ for at least a quarter century if not longer.

In the past week we featured Los Angeles to Hawaii fares for just over $350 in low season.

Have a great time in Europe.

      Aloha.

      1. Thanks ! While it’s true that in 2014 we went to Oahu during the 2nd half of August, I still think the prices are not justified, especially given the current price for oil.

  18. My family is going to the Big Island for two weeks from July 8 – 22 , 2017. We are leaving from Chicago, Indianapolis and Fredericksburg. When is the best time to buy the tickets and is it best to fly to Honolulu and get a local flight over the Big Island.

    1. Hi Dick,

Hardly any difference in price flying to Honolulu vs Kona so suggest Kona from Chicago. About $1,200 which is to be expected for your peak of summer weekend dates. Doubtful that will improve and availability could definitely be an issue. Suggest buying air, accommodations and car ASAP.

      Aloha.

  19. Aloha!!!! I would like to book travel to Maui from Denver at anytime within the next year. We are extremely flexible and are looking for the best/least expensive flights. Do you have any recommendations for the least expensive time to visit? Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much for your help!

    1. Hi Kim,

There are $503 RT airfares from January through early March on Virgin America. Reasonable connection and great price. That’s about as low as you’re going to find. Should be more good prices after mid-April through May and then again in the fall.

      Aloha.

  20. Aloha, I just found this site and its looks very helpful. My family and I were looking to fly from Chicago (Ohare) to Hawaii. The dates we are looking at are June 23, 2017 – July 1, 2017. I am looking at fares and they are about $1000. What is the lowest price that we might be able to get for the dates we are planning to travel. We have a family of 6 and the airfare will be a major cost. Thanks in advance for your help.

    1. Hi Robin.

You didn’t indicate which island so we’ll base it on Honolulu. $1100-1200 on your dates with nonstop or good connection. That’s summer and price is to be expected. Otherwise come visit during second half of August which will yield better prices across the board.

      Aloha.

    2. You are actually considering paying $6000 to fly your family to Hawaii on what is basically a domestic flight?!? For $750/person (possibly even less if you check the prices early in the week) you can fly to Paris or Milan, you save $1500, you rent a car and go on and drive to the French or Italian Rivieras.

      1. OVI-you’re probably right, but maybe these people would rather go to Hawaii. I’ve been to Europe and Hawaii-it’s just a matter of what you want to do. Info’s fine, but don’t be judgemental.

  21. Trying to book flight from Southern California to Honolulu March 2017. Cheapest I have found so far is over $600! Any advice – will it come down later? Best airport to fly out of?
Thank you for your kind assistance.

    1. Hi Sheila.

You must be talking about 2nd half of month, which is falling in expensive spring break. San Diego has fares in the $400’s all month.

      Aloha.

  22. My fiancé and I are looking at booking a flight May 25th and coming back June 3rd. We are flying out of Omaha, NE and prices are in the 1,000s. We are going on a cruise that is departing from Honolulu from the 27th to the 3rd so our dates are not flexible. Do you think prices will increase for those dates and we should book now or wait until spring to book our airline tickets? Thanks for all of your great info!

    1. Hi Taylor,

Fares from Omaha to Hawaii are high generally. It looks like about $1,010. If you returned mid-week or had multiple connections, it would be cheaper.

Does the cruise company offer any airline component? Otherwise, you can wait and it might come down. In any event it isn’t likely to go up.

      Aloha.

  23. My family and I are planning a trip to Hawaii (Big Island or Honolulu) in February 2017. We are looking for flights under $575.00/Each Roundtrip with shortest flight (No More Than 15-Hours) possible. Also, what are some nice hotels in both areas for no more than $200.00/Night with breakfast included.

Any help with this trip would be appreciated – Thanks so much!

    Jennifer

    1. Hi Jennifer.

You didn’t say where you are traveling from but your IP address says Houston. First on hotels, we suggested the Hawaii Revealed series of guidebooks as a great help in planning including accommodations. Also consider vacation rentals, which are definitely our preference.

Airfares mid-week in first half of February start at $674 on multiple airlines. Not likely that will improve.

      Aloha.

  24. Hello. Looking for a bit of guidance please and thank you.
We are planning a trip to Hawaii around the first two weeks of June 2017. (Looking to fly out anywhere from June 2 to the 6 and returning anywhere from a June 12 to the 16.) Flying out of Houston to Honolulu.
    My questions:
When is the best time to buy plane tickets?
How do you know when to pull the trigger and buy?
Is there a site that can give you an estimate/ average cost of the plane tickets?
Would it be cheaper to fly to the west coast then to Hawaii?

I found tickets for round trip, nonstop from Houston to Honolulu, depart Friday, June 2 returning Monday, June 12 for $744/ per person plus taxes, etc. Is this a good price?

Thank you so much for your help as I have been scouring the internet the past several months trying to find the best deal.
    Mindi

    1. Hi Mindi.

Currently airfares with any kind of reasonable connection are from mid-$800’s. Prices should ease for your departure date but your return will remain costly as it is in high season. So our best hope would be $700’s if you wait a few months for spring airfares to occur. Price range for Houston starts in low $600’s and goes to to $1200, depending on season, but you’ll in the range indicated almost without doubt. We do not see tickets for 6/2-6/12 for $744, but rather for $845.

Also be careful about very long layovers. Some can be a 30 hour duration which is a terrible way to start a trip. Also flying from the west coast won’t save much if anything and is very problematic with multiple tickets, possible delays/missed flights, security, etc.

      Aloha.

  25. Thank you for the great site!
I’m getting a lot out of it.

For a late-August vacation, when would you expect the best airfare – Chicago to Kauai?
What price range would you expect (or have historically been available)?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Mike.

Thank you. Starting mid-August there are fares on Alaska with a pretty good connection for $827. That’s about as good as you’re likely to find. Otherwise, sit tight and there should be more of those as we get to perhaps March or after.

      Aloha.

  26. My family is looking to take a week long vacation to Hawaii in 2017… We’ll be flying out of Arizona and thinking of traveling around June… What type of airfare should we expect to see??? Would a different time of year be better to focus on??? Please help!!! Than you… 😀

    1. Hi Bryce,

Currently HNL is pricing in low $700’s all of June. That should come down to $500’s or less for first week of June only. If you’re traveling after that (either direction) then $700’s is about what you can expect. Definitely better to come before or after (not during) spring break or next fall. As an example, fares through early March are $498 RT as of today.

      Aloha.

  27. Hi.. We are planning a wedding 06/01/17-06/07/17 flying out of Salt Lake CIty. Tickets now are like $650.. i was wondering when the best time to book was? or if $650 was a good price. please and thank you for your help..

    1. Hi Jimmy.

Best hope price is about $500 and your dates are about $150 more. Try waiting a few months. No guarantee it will work and the airlines don’t know yet.

      Aloha.

  28. Hello

I am trying to Book tickets from Vancouver YVR to Honolulu HNL on 13 April 2017 to 17 April 2017. The price that I see now is 1950 (2 adults 1 child and 1 Infant).

Do you think I should book it now at this price or wait and see if I get cheaper tickets.

    Any inputs would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    1. Hi JS.

So about $450 for your dates or about $100 less if you can leave and return a day earlier. Great prices on Westjet, doubtful they’ll improve.

      Aloha.

  29. Aloha!! We will be traveling from Memphis to Maui June 15-23, 2017 (Thursday thru the next Friday). Should prices go down in the coming months (currently hovers around $1000 RT each)..? Thank you so much! This is our first trip to Hawaii and we greatly appreciate your insight!

    1. Hi Kelly,

Yes, confirming that pricing – about $1,050 with a good connection. It probably will not improve at all by waiting and we’d actually suggest buying now. That is a very busy time here in the islands. Also lock in some accommodations and car rental.

      Aloha.

  30. Aloha,

I’m planning a visit to Maui in early-mid May 2017. Current RT ticket is $458 from SFO with Hawaiian Airlines. Do you expect the price to drop further? When is a good time to buy?

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Jenny,

They may come down by $60 or so if you wait. Don’t know when or for sure if that will happen.

      Aloha.

  31. I am departing from JFK May 27- June 3 it is gonna be 5 of us and we are flying to HNL. Looking at Hawaiian Airlines and economy comfort seats since it’s straight flight. The prices now are $1390 person, should I buy these tickets now or hold out and wait? They have already dropped once. Thanks

    1. Hi Ashley,

Looks like $984 per person for your dates right now, plus the cost of the comfort seats ($145 each way). Generally we expect prices to come down further for spring dates. The issue with your travel dates is that they are Saturdays. Those will remain higher and should improve with target of saving an additional $200 (so under $800RT) plus comfort seat cost. So do wait.

      Aloha.

      1. I have been looking under Hawaiian Airlines site. Is there somewhere else better to look where I can choose my seats? Thanks so much

        1. Hi Ashley.

Not sure what you are asking about “where I can choose my seats.” Please clarify so we can help.

          Aloha.

  32. Want to plan vacation time, 1-2 weeks, Kaneohe Hi, from Tampa, FL to visit my Marine son stationed there. Would like to know the best, cheapest time to fly, and visit. Thank you for your advise, Trinna

    1. Hi Trinna,

Details are already in the cheapest time posts. You can fly through mid-March for about $634 on multiple airlines, as of today. Good price.

      Aloha.

  33. Hello,

We are flying to Kauai from Feb 18 – Feb 25th, from the Detroit area. We have not purchased our flights yet. I am wondering if we should purchase now, or give it a week or two to see if rates go down? (Hoping for sales)

    Mahalo!

  34. Hi,

My partner and I will be traveling 2x per year to HI to see his kids. We plan to go in March and July. Currently, we have the Alaska Card that gives us one ticket for 99.00 My question is, to get the most out of our companion price ticket, should we use the ticket for March or July travel? Looking at both dates right now, the prices are very high from what we have paid in the past. Any advice or thoughts?

    1. Hi Courtney,

Much of March and all of July is high season so neither is ideal for getting good pricing. If those are your only choices, then March may turn out somewhat better, as spring break tends to be more changeable in terms of how the airlines price it. Not sure that helps, but really mid-August or April would be a lot better if that’s an option.

      Aloha

  35. Aloha…we are going to a wedding in Maui end of July to beginning of August. There will be 4 of us travelling…when is the best time to purchase our airfare? I have been checking almost everyday for fares and price doesn’t change much. Do you think Black Friday may have a special? Mahalo…Kalola

    1. Hi Kalola.

This isn’t what you want to hear. That’s high season, and as per post details in the part entitled “Cheap Flights to Hawaii | When to Buy Year Round” tickets are best bought as far in advance as possible. Prices won’t be going down; there will not be sales for end of July.

      Aloha.

  36. Hello,

I’m planning on vacationing in Maui and then to Oahu starting Dec. 12th. Your website posted the best time to book flights for this time would be during Thanksgiving week to see if prices would drop. I have not booked my flights yet, but I am flying from Oakland airport so do you think I should still wait until Thanksgiving week for possible deals? Is this risky or has this been a common pattern in the past?

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Ashley,

No one knows for sure, so you’ll have to use your own judgment. We definitely are anticipating Black Friday and Cyber Monday Hawaii deals including from the airlines. Your travels are in low season so that looks good too in any event. We’d wait, but that’s us.

      Aloha.

  37. Hi there,

When would be the best time to book for April 6-15, 2017? Prices are ok right now on Hawaiian, but will they drop at all? We would be travelling from Portland to Oahu.

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Wendy,

Probably won’t get better for those dates unless it happens at very last minute. Spring break.

      Aloha.

  38. I want to go to Hawaii sometime in 2017. I am retires and my plans are flexible. I don’t have a lot of money and wanted to go to Maui and also visit the Arizona and battleship Missouri. A visit to the pineapple plantation is also a must and go to a luaus. I can only stay 7 days. Don’t want to rent a car.
