  1. Just found out I’m pregNant and canceling our Caribbean cruise trip due to Zika. Switching vacation plans and Looking to book flights to Hawaii 4/13 or 4/14 through 4/23. Kind of late, but flights are looking about $700 to $800 r/t. Should we wait or book now? Any suggestions for cheaper flights (ideally $500 rt) or cheapest airlines. Thanks!

    1. Hi.

You did not state origination point but IP address indicates Bay Area. Your dates are expensive at the moment. San Jose is running at least $100 higher than OAK or SFO, in case one of those works. Otherwise, changing dates or getting into multiple connections is the only way if trying to book immediately.

Could come down by waiting. If you are willing to just hang out and be flexible, you could do much better with possibility of under your $500 mark. Can’t promise but it looks hopeful.

      ALoha.

  2. Our family plan to have a vacation to Maui on Aug 21, 2017 from LAX, i am seeing air prices around $700, is this a good price?
should i wait? what would be a reasonable price and when will it be at the low point?

Thanks a lot for your help!

    1. Hi Harry.

There’s the distinct possibility of under $500 if you wait. Can’t promise it will happen so you’ll have to decide if waiting works for you. And if it does happen, it could be any time from now until you travel.

      Aloha.

  3. Hi There-

Looking to travel the last two weeks in July… Flying to Honolulu from Philadelphia, PA for a week in Hawaii, then to LA for a week, and then back home to Philly. The cheapest I can find ins @$1220 per person.

    Is that a good price?

    Gary

    1. Hi Gary.

Not good, but not unusual either. You’re looking at over $1,000 without the stopover. Not likely it will improve.

      Aloha.

  4. We are travelling to Kauai from Seattle December 28th, 2017 through Jan 8th 2018. With companion fares, we are looking at $800 RT pp. Should we go ahead and buy now or will there be better deals down the road? We realize this timeframe is peak travel.

  5. flying to Maui on 2/21/18 and returning on 3/7/2018. what is the best price on Hawaiian
air first class on a 7am flight

  6. Aloha! Kamaaina here, trying to get to Seattle first week in August, the reverse of what you normally see. We’ve been watching prices for the past few months, but haven’t seen any real sales pop up. Do you predict fares will drop closer to August, or should we grit our teeth and buy? One way fare is okay. Mahalo!

  7. Looking to fly to Honolulu from Richmond early May. I’m seeing shorter leg flights around $850. What’s a reasonable price from the east coast for off season? Should I wait until April or is this as low as it gets?

  8. We are going to be in Oahu from June 21 through June 28. Those dates are set. Could possibly come a day earlier and leave a day later. We are leaving from Los Angeles . Prices are around 760 right now. What do you think. Should I go ahead or wait. Thanks

    1. Hi Todd.

Highly unlikely that waiting will yield a result you will like. Suggest buying now and price is as expected.

      Aloha.

  9. Hi, Our family of five looking to travel from LAX to HNL during Oct,17 or Nov,17 or Feb,18 with flexible date. Which month will us able to find the best deal and when should we be looking for deals?

  10. Hi! I’m looking to travel to Honolulu January 24-July 1 2017 from Boston. Cheapest tickets I can find are about $1,100. Should I buy now or wait?

Thank you so much for your great advice! This site is super helpful!

    1. Hi Jenn,

Assuming you mean June 24 – July 1. That’s as high season as it gets and prices won’t come down. Suggest buying now for best availability.

      Aloha.

  11. Hi there, family of 7 are planning to fly from seattle wa to KOA, Oct 1st to Oct 2nd 2017. Our dates are not flexible due to work schedules. Prices are around 700$ right now. Iv’e heard this is average, but I am also hearing if I wait until summer to buy, I could get them as low as 500+ tax. Does this sound right to you? Looking foward to hearing from you, and thank you greatly for your reply!!

    1. Hi Carly.

Not sure about your dates – October 1 to October 2? In any event, for October 1 departure there are fares of $455 right now (depending on return date) on Alaska, which is great. Very competitive market, but with fixed dates, might be good to buy now at that price.

      Aloha.

  12. I am trying to go to a honolulu wedding during July 8 weekend from bay area. Our leave and arrival dates are flexible.

If we leave wed July 5 from sfo, and return July 10 monday, tickets are ~$605. Is this an okay price, or should we wait a little longer to purchase?

  13. Can you please give us some info – 1st time travelling to HI – taking my mom for her 80th birthday so she can cross off her bucket list! We are flying from Milwaukee or Chicago to Kauai next March 25-April 1 ,2018 – what can we expect to pay in airfare and when is the best time to purchase it? Thank you for your help!

    1. Hi Kelly.

Are you flexible on your dates? Problem is you’re flying right around Easter which is likely to have high season spring rates. For your dates we’d expect to see $1,000+ from either airport. But if you can fly later – mid April say, then perhaps $200 or more savings is possible. Timing for spring break travel is as far in advance as possible and for after spring break, about 90 days in advance or less.

      Aloha.

  14. Hi there. We’re planning to travel from MSP to Maui May 4th-13th. Possibly the 6th-13th but we’re hoping to add two days to the front. I’ve seen fare sales on both coasts but nothing out of MSP yet. I remember watching prices last year for a May vacation and we ultimately decided Hawaii was out of range. However in April, after we planned a trip elsewhere, flights for May came down nicely to around $500. So I know there’s still hope but I’m looking for some reassurance! 🙂 We hope to not have to cancel our trip. Many thanks for all you do!

      1. I’m on pins and needles! Thankfully we have until April 7th to cancel our condo without penalty so we have a few more weeks to hope for a sale. Many thanks!

  15. I plan to leave from SAT on 7/7, and cobble a SWA flt to PHX or OAK (or anywhere on the W.Coast having best connection at that time. Since I’m jammed with peak pricing on a summer outbound, shall I do a O-W, and wait till sometime in the fall when I’m due to return, and try to snag a O-W in low season back? ..Or just go ahead and bite the bullet by scheduling an RT now?

    Thx for all you do-

    1. Hi Nick.

Good to hear from you again. Let’s check the crystal ball…. Well bay area always beats Phoenix, that’s for sure. Don’t know which island you’re flying to. But using OGG as an example, a round trip with a departure of 7/6 (if you can swing 1 day earlier), returning in mid-August on is under $500 total. Nearly $100 more for 7/7. Anyway, not bad at all. If instead you buy one-way on the 7th, it is going to be mid $300’s, and maybe $50 less on 7/6. It all depends on which island and whether it is non stop or not. And a one way back is going to be $230.

Not a huge difference any way to cut it. But San Jose is probably your best bet, followed by Oakland, then San Diego.

      Hope that helps.

      Aloha.

  16. Hello,

Thank you in advance for your help! I appreciate it. My family of 4 is staying in Kauai July 15-29th. Our dates are set – it’s a Saturday to Saturday (2 weeks). We would be traveling from San Diego to Lihue. Tickets are around $750 now. Would you recommend waiting for them to go down, or do you think I should buy them now?

    Mahalo!

    1. Hi Nikki.

Peak summer – peak prices. That’s not a bad airfare and we see no reason to wait.

      Aloha.

  17. Looking for last minute deal (flight plus hotel) to Honolulu (Oahu) from Richmond, Norfolk or Newport News Virginia.

  18. We are planning to travel from Austin, TX to the big island Oct 7-13, 2017. Looks like flying in/out of KOA is less expensive than Hilo. Question, please: should I book airfare now, or wait a bit? Many thanks!

    1. Hi Cathy.

Flying on Friday and Saturday will increase costs. If you can fly mid-week there are great fares – just over $700 for October on American with good connection. That’s about as good as you’ll find. For your dates the same connection will cost $900+. Not sure what to suggest and not clear that your specific dates will improve.

      Aloha.

      1. Thanks for the advice–it’s what I needed to pull the trigger. Our dates are not flexible, as we are travelling with kids on fall break from school, but I was able to get $855 pp, taxes included, with our weekend dates, 1 stop each way with good timing, so all-in-all, not too bad.

  19. Flying to Kauai 9-29 would like Hawaiian first class, when should we buy tickets?

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Ginny.

First class won’t vary as much as economy, so may not be a difference in buying now or later.

      Aloha.

  20. Looking for late August and It seems like when I was ready to jump on Hawiian Airlines it went up around $100. The other carriers don’t seem to matching. Is $829 for a Sat to Sat reasonable or should we hold a little longer and hope they drop to either match the other carriers (around $730)? Thanks for you advice!

    1. Hi Rich.

We’ve barely started to see good prices for late summer/fall. So suggest waiting since availability won’t be an issue.

      Aloha.

  21. Hey there!

We are traveling from ATL for our honeymoon 11/24-12/1, 2017. I have been following flights for a few weeks and they remain around $890. Can I expect flights to drop if I wait it out a little longer, or is this typical of airfare this time of year? I know it’s early, but I don’t want to book too early or too late!!

    Mahalo!!

    1. Hi Jess.

$796 on your dates to Maui. $877 to Honolulu (although nonstop is $200 more). Price is good for Thanksgiving.

      Aloha.

  22. Hola! My wife and I just got married and are planning on flying to Maui via LA (or wherever) from Tampa. As its our honeymoon, we would like to use some of those catering points and upgrade our seats. Best we have seen is $1000 for Comfort+ through Delta.

    Your thoughts? Many Thanks!

    1. Hi Dan.

The cheapest we saw for Comfort + was $922 some midweek days spring and fall.

      Aloha.

  23. Greetings,
We are going to wedding in May 2017. Want to fly into KOA but out of another airport on Maui. Wasnt sure if we could fly into one airport and fly out of another. We are staying at the Hilton Waikoloa the first 5 nights and then would like to make the most of our trip by also going to Maui and staying somewhere there (no idea yet) first time ever to Hawaii! What is the best approach for cost savings on flights. Travel dates: depart CMH (Cols Ohio) May 5 or 6, and return back on May 16 or 17?

Thank you and we appreciate any advise you can offer.
    Ken

    1. Hi Ken.

That will run from mid $800’s (with an 18 hour duration) to about $1,000 or slightly higher with an under 13 hour duration. No great deal from neighboring airports either unfortunately. These prices probably will not change much between now and then.

Wish we had something better to suggest.

      Aloha.

  24. Hello – thank you for all the details. Planning on a trip from Chicago to Hilo from June 1st to 11th; airfare is just over $1000 at the moment any thoughts on waiting for lower fares or booking now? Thanks much!

    1. Hi Sharon.

Airfare for that route on your dates starts at $791. Best fares are using a combination of carriers so you might also look at something like Orbitz to price it out.

      Aloha.

  25. Hi there! Thank you so much for all the great info on your site! It has been really helpful. My question is this: my husband and I are flying to HNL from Dallas, TX (DFW/DEAL) on June 9th. More family will fly over with our 3 kids on June 16th, but we all want to take the same flight back on June 24th or 25th. Is there a website or travel agency you recommend that can arrange this complicated flight schedule? We’ve always flown together and I’ve only booked online so I’ve never had to figure this out. Is it better/cheaper to just book one way tickets there and back so all 7 of us can fly back together?

Thank you so much for all of your help!

    -Ruthie

    1. Hi Ruthie.

$860-$1100 is the price range, and that isn’t unexpected. It’s not complicated, but if you aren’t comfortable you can get a local travel agent to book it or you can call the airlines and have them book it over the phone. Both of these will result in extra fees and be careful of the airline charging more on the phone than you see online. Suggest American and United.

      Aloha.

  26. Looking to book a 1 week trip (for a family of 6+1 child) to Maui at the beginning of July. Out of LAX we are seeing low 700s as the best right now. Some sites say that 47-54 days in advance is the best time to purchase domestic air. Wondering if this is true for us or book now even though we are still 4 months out?

  27. Hi… we are planning on booking a trip thru Costco around 9/9 from LAX to Kauai and then on to Maui on the 13th. Can you recommend how far out we should look into booking our trip. FYI… our dates are a bit flexible in September. Thank you!

    1. Hi Kristin.

We know nothing about booking through Costco so won’t comment on them or other travel agencies. You likely won’t save money booking but you may find it more convenient. Airfare from LAX to LIH and OGG to LAX will run $600-$700 depending on day of week. Prices might come down up to $100 if you wait and weekdays will probably be cheaper than weekends.

      Aloha.

  28. Greetings and Thank You for all the great information. Planning a trip for middle of October 2017: Minneapolis to LIH, (interisland to OGG), OGG back to Minneapolis. Interisland flight will be booked separately. The MSP-LIH::OGG-MSP is running $800-$900 right now (1 stop each direction). Think prices will decrease around May perhaps?

    Aloha

    1. Hi Dieter.

Suggest waiting with a target of low $700’s plus inter-island. Can’t say it will happen in May. Instead we’d suggest there is no rush to buy for that season. Might not happen until closer to your trip, but you will get a better deal if you hang in there. Let us know how it turns out okay?

      Aloha.

  29. Hello! My friend and I are looking to visit Hawaii sometime this year. We are from Ohio, and could fly out from Cincinnati (CVG) or the Columbus airport.. we were wondering what island would be best to fly into, and what months are the best! Look forward to hearing from you, thank you!

    1. Hi Michelle,

CVG is cheaper. For a first visit, perhaps consider Maui. It has some of everything. Expect to spend $725 in May or late August/September. Both would be excellent times to visit.

      Aloha.

  30. Hello! We plan to fly from Minneapolis to Maui June 20-26th. Flights are $890 right now. I have read on multiple sites to wait as tickets may come down as much as $100. There are 5 of us flying, so we want to get the best price possible. Any advice? Thank you!

    1. Hi Dawn.

Almost with certainly it will not come down. Fares are as expected on that route in summer. Suggest buying now.

      Aloha.

  31. Hello! Trying to decide if I got the best deal for my travel dates out of Billings, MT to Maui.
Traveling mid-June, 2017. Tickets are almost $900 each. Should I wait in hope of a better deal? My dates can’t really be moved.
    Thanks for your help!

    1. Hi Jen.

Yes mostly over $900 and not at all likely to come down. Did find a few lower fares like $738 that was comprised of two one-ways. 6/13 on Delta and returning 6/26 on American.

      Suggest buying soon.

      Aloha.

  32. Have for the last 7 years hit Maui on the tail end of kids’ summer break (the last 2 weeks right before school starts around the 3rd week of August, which historically have been lower when compared to June, July and early August), but noticed in the last 2 years the airfare for those same weeks appear to have somewhat remained closer to the peak summer rates (as if airlines extended the summer window up to those weeks that we would normally go)
So this year we are planning differently by heading to Maui at the start of the kids’ summer break (3rd week of June), this week I noticed that fares have come down a little bit, the lowest price I am seeing is around $650 non-stop SFO to OGG. Not familiar with peak summer pricing – is $650 a good price? with still 4 months to go can we wait a little more hoping airfare to come down more?

    1. Hi Phil.

$619 to $644 RT that third week. Good price. Typically $700+ so doubtful it will come down.

      Aloha.

  33. Hi

My husband and I had to postpone our honeymoon and are looking to re-book for travel in November ’17.
We will be flying from Sydney, Aus to Honolulu (then on to Vegas, Maui, Honolulu then home to Sydney) but the flights are coming in at approx $1600 extra we had paid just under $2200 each AUD originally.

Im just wondering if there is a cheaper time of the year for us to travel and / or is there the potential for a sale as $1600 extra is quite a lot to pay.

    Thanks

    1. Hi Charity,

We don’t really follow the market between Australia and Hawaii to be honest, as our visitors are from the US mainland.

      Aloha.

  34. Hello.
We are taking our family of 5 to Maui at the end of May, beginning of June. I had read you can get pricing close to $400 out of LAX but I’m not seeing that yet. Would you recommend we buy now (prices around $500) or should it come down in the next few weeks/month?
    Thanks for your input!

  35. Tickets from Charleston, SC to Kauai are at $732 the last week of September to October. Will this price likely go down if I wait until June (3 months before to purchase)? I am wondering what the average price is to fly from the East coast and if flights may come down below $600? Thanks for your insight!

    1. Hi Alleyn.

That is a great price for that route and would suggest buying. Under $600? Definitely not.

      Aloha.

  36. Hello Beat of Hawaii,

My friends and I are planning to go to Kauai from Seattle in August from the 17th to the 23rd. I have been keeping my on on flights and I missed a deal for $470. Now the flight prices are around $520. Do you suggest we buy the tickets now or wait?

    Thank you so much!

    1. Hi Paulina.

Because Seattle is among the most contested markets right now, it could work out to wait. Right now non stops for your dates are over $700. Otherwise, best deal is $526 on United with a quick layover in SFO. That’s a good price.

  37. Hi Kasey,

I am taking my family (14 of us) to Kona over the end of year holiday break. We have rented a villa from 12/27/2017 to 1/6/2018. Different family members will be flying out of SJC, SFO, SMF, and ALB. Is it best to buy airline tickets now or wait a while and see if the price comes down?

    Thanks for your help.

    Aloha

    1. Hi Walt.

As indicated in post, price will not come down for Christmas/New Years. Best to buy now.

      Aloha.

  38. Hello

I am looking to book one way flights from NYC to Honolulu very close to Christmas for my parents in law. The price is around $1000 per person and up right now. Can I expect a dip in prices during the year, or should I jump on anything I see at that level?

    Thanks

    1. Hi Mel.

Prices don’t come down for the holidays. Only thing that happens is availability decreases and prices, duration and connections go up.

      Aloha.

  39. Flying in and out of Las Vegas, or any Southern California airports would be a little better for us. How do prices look there? And when would be best to purchase for those locations? Also, on our island hoppers the lowest we’ve seen is $109 do you think there will be movement on those or are they usually pretty consistent?

  40. Hello, we are traveling to the big island June 4th then hopping over to Kauai on the 11th and flying home the 15th. We live in Utah so could fly out of multiple locations on the west coast. When do you suggest booking to get the cheapest flights and which would be the cheapest cities to fly out of? Thank you! Your website is wonderful.

    1. Hi Kasey.

We personally find it rather challenging to fly out of alternate cities. From SLC, high $800’s on Delta into Kona and out of Lihue with good connections on your dates. It is about $250 less out of Seattle if that works and it is nonstop in both directions.

      Aloha.

      1. With our dates being during the beginning of the busy season do you think it would be best to purchase now? Or hold on to see if there are deals available after spring break? Thank you so much for your recommendations.

        1. Hi Kasey.

While outbound could come down a bit if you wait, return could go up. Depends a bit too on whether you are thinking of trying Seattle or just biting the bullet on SLC. In SLC there’s less competition and availability compared with Seattle. So with Seattle you “could” try waiting, although again our sense again is to buy now.

          Aloha.

          1. Flying in and out of Las Vegas, or any Southern California airports would be a little better for us. How do prices look there? And when would be best to purchase for those locations? Also, on our island hoppers the lowest we’ve seen is $109 do you think there will be movement on those or are they usually pretty consistent? Thanks for all your help! Looking forward to visiting the islands soon 🙂

          2. Hi Kasey.

San Diego looks best. In $500’s. Yes that’s the price between KOA and LIH and doubt it will come down. One nonstop which is tremendous time saver.

            Aloha.
