  1. Aloha,

We are slated to fly to HNL arriving on 2/11/18 and returning on 2/18/18, after the previous couple of plans fizzled. With our timeshare booked, we are getting there one way or another.

Even though we live 10 minutes from LAX, the fares are suggesting we fly out of San Diego, and even ditching our traditional Hawaiian Airlines and using the savings for a more lavish meal on the island.

Our friends, who live in Philadelphia, have accepted our invitation to join us and I want to ask you, the experts, if there is a viable route from there to Honolulu without the crazy connections and layovers. Their saving grace is that in addition to our home, they have family in LA and can stretch their vacation a few days before and after to either fly out of LAX or join us in San Diego to fly together. In summary, does an affordable sane route exist between Philadelphia and Honolulu? Thank you for your insight.

We are excited to return to Hawaii once again, and this time with more friends in tow.

    Mahalo,
    Alan

    1. Hi Alan,

From Philadelphia, expect to pay about $850-$950 during February, with a duration of under 13 hours and a 1 hr layover on the west coast. Multiple airline choices. That’s about as good as it will get. From San Diego about $500+ on your dates exactly or change to mid-week or 1-stop to reduce price further. LA is $550-$650 right now but target is about $100 less.

Moreover keep watching prices on these, especially west coast, as they will go down from where they are today.

      Aloha.

  2. Aloha!

Hello I am using Early March of 2018 to gauge the airline price four four from Dayton, OH (DAY) to Kauai (LIH) for a trip in May 2018. I don’t have much flexibility in dates and it looks like leaving on a Friday vs. a Saturday can save money. Dates would be May 18th leave on Thursday June 1st. I am flexible on staying 12 nights vs. 13 if it would save a material amount. It looks like American is my best bet seiing about $1,090 round trip, but any other suggestions or hints would be most appreciated such as are my travel dates considered economy time for flights?

    Mahalo!

    1. Hi Barb.

That is an expensive route any time of year. Prices are largely route and convenience dependent. And yes expect to pay north of $900. Best time to buy will probably be fall or after. Sorry to not have any better ideas on this one.
      Aloha.

  3. Are there any consistent deals from Chicago to Hawaii? Went last year for about $800 per person roundtrip but I watched for several months. Is there anything out of Indianapolis?
    Thanks for your help.

    1. Hi Joe.

Both cities aren’t well priced in terms of flights to Hawaii. Best deal we’re seeing at the moment is $715 on Virgin America starting early September – to Maui.

      Aloha.

  4. I am looking to go to Kona from Louisville in early April of 2018, when do you think the best time to look for flights would be?

  5. Beat of Hawaii – I love your website and the periodic emails I receive! Please, if you can offer some thoughts/advice on my particular travel planning situation, I would greatly appreciate it!

I’m planning a trip to the big island for my family of 5 plus my parents for February 2018. We already have a condo booked, thankfully, so between that and the kids’ winter break (week of Presidents Day) our dates are not very flexible. We’ll be flying to/from Seattle on Thursday Feb 15th, and returning the 23rd. I’ve been watching fares for a few weeks already, which seem to be anywhere from $350 to $1100 each way, or $700 a $2200 per person round trip. Some of the flights are at perfectly awful times, some with 2 connections, some are direct. Is this the best we’re likely to see? If we really want mid-day direct flights (i.e., Alaska or maybe Delta) or one quick layover, should I book now or is there typically a ‘sweet spot’ for booking mid-February flights? Do you have suggestions on a ‘target’ round trip fare I should watch for?

So many questions! Thanks in advance for your help! Looking forward to more great info from Beat of Hawaii!

    1. Hi Kate.

Your dates will cost $700 to $800+ for nonstop. If they come down in price, that could happen at point with a target of $550RT. Personally suggest waiting until that happens. Give it some time.

      Aloha.

  6. Please advise me when the best time to purchase roundtrip airfare from SMF to LIH departing 8/30/2017 and returning 9/9/2017. My dates are firm because I have a rental commitment for those dates. I appreciate any hep/suggestion you may have.
    Mahalo
    Cathleen

    1. Hi Cathleen.

Currently low $600’s and target is maybe $50 less. So you might just buy now.

      Aloha.

  7. I am planning to travel to kona in mid fubuary either out of Minneapolis, MN or Fargo, ND. The date I’m looking at leaving is febuary 13 and returning the 19. Round trip out of Minneapolis is anywhere from $830 to $900 and out of Fargo is around $1,100, just wondering if it’s worth booking now or should I wait to see if the prices will drop some.

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Andrew.

For mid-February we’d suggest waiting. That having been said, the best price you’re probably going to find with a fast connection is about $800. So keep an eye out for that whenever it occurs.

      Aloha.

  8. Going to Kona from Cincinnati in November. How far out should I book the flight for the best rate?

  9. Aloha!

Thank you for all the wonderful information on your web page. It has been so helpful.

Please share some advice on when to purchase tickets from the West Coast (SFO or OAK) to Lihue in early November 2017?
    Mahalo!

    1. Hi Hop.

Fare sales for fall should start in the next month or two. Stay tuned.

      Aloha.

  10. looking for best deal for flight from RDU to HNL around 3rd week of August till early November. IN the past there were good deals available in May or July for that time frame. Should e expect the same this year.

  11. Good morning,

My family of five are going to Maui for the first time. LAX to OGG departing 8/1 (Tues) and fly back out 8/6 (Sunday) (we could stay till Monday 8/7). I am not familiar with LAX/OGG route prices. have seen $735 nonstop as the cheapest so far. I have heard to wait 54 days out but not sure if that is a good thing to do. The flights on major airlines are still open. Would you suggest waiting another month (while monitoring seats) or book now as you think this could be best deal for Los Angeles to Maui. Many thanks!!

    1. Hi MD.

That is correct price and it is quite unlikely that it will go down for your high season dates. Therefore suggest buying now.

      Aloha.

  12. Hi. We are looking to vacation in Hawaii any time after August 2017, could even be next year. Any island is fine. I really am looking for the cheapest time to fly to Hawaii. There will be 2 adults and a 1 year old that could sit on my lap if that’s aloud. I would like it warm enough to get in the ocean when we visit. Flying out of STL. Thank you!

    1. Hi Brittany.

$644 RT on American with good connection to Maui this fall if you act today. Ocean temperature is good for swimming year round.

      Aloha.

  13. I came to this page to find out the best time to fly to Hawaii. Unless I overlooked it, I never saw that question get answered. Can you provide the time of year that is cheapest to fly to Hawaii?

  14. Hi,

When do you predict the next price drop (if any)? We are planning to fly from SFO to HNL anytime between late June-Early August and are flexible between weekday/weekend departure.

    Mahalo!

    1. Hi Rachelle.

You cannot expect any “price drop” for those dates. Current fare of about $620 RT on Hawaiian is a great price for summer.

      Aloha.

  15. Hello,

We will be traveling 9/09 to Oahu from Los Angeles. Do you think there may be a drop in airfare in the next couple months?

    Thank you

    1. Hi Shari.

Probably not for weekends. Airfares mid-week are about $100 less on that route if that works.

      Aloha.

  16. Hi

Looking to travel to Hawaii, a family of four ( All Adults)
When is the best time to visit and also easy on the pocket (as Bank of Mon and Dad paying)
Should i pay for Flights and Hotels separately or as a joint package. any Companies that you would recommend or have had good reviews frome.
We are travelling from London. UK
    Many thanks for you Help

    Anil

    1. Hi Anil.

There have been quite a few good airfare deals from the UK. Having said that we don’t publish them because our readers are based in North America. Sorry to not be of more help with that. Regarding packages, Pleasant Holidays is a good company that’s been in this business for decades. Lots of other choices too. You need to compare and see what if any savings exist compared with buying individual components.

We look forward to nonstop flights between the UK and Hawaii in the next year or two.

      Aloha.

  17. Good morning,
We are flying into Kona for our first trip to Hawaii. We are flying in either on 12/17 or 12/18 and departing 12/29, flights are looking like $1,372 on United. I am going with them as I am also going to try to use my miles. Since I have never flown to Hawaii, I am unsure if this is a good economy roundtrip price or not? Please advise and thanks!

    1. Hi Jennifer.

You didn’t say but it looks like you’re flying from Greenville. We’re seeing about $1,500 for best connection, which is on American. Not sure that it will come down for those dates/route unfortunately. If you came at another time, the savings would be over $500 per person. It is not likely to use miles for peak season but no harm in trying.

      Aloha.

  18. Flying to HNL from PBI on October 5, 2017, returning on October 14, 2017. Flights are currently a little over $1,000.00 RT. Should I wait or book now?

  19. Plan to fly from Denver to Maui 5/31/2017 to 7/8/2017. tickets are $950 and higher.
Should I wait or buy now. I have been watching for a while.

    1. Hi Elli.

Sorry to say that doesn’t look good. About $915 to $949 today. Not likely to improve by waiting.

      Aloha.

  20. We are flying out of Portland to Maui in late January. Considering that you stated that Delta is gearing up to compete for Hawaii flights out of Seattle, do you anticipate a price war in January? Would you recommend buying our flights now or waiting?

    1. Hi John.

That route is still on sale for January, and has been for a while. Suggest buying now at between $366 and $460 with one stop. Nonstop will probably remain pricey at about $580 and that may not come down by waiting.

      Aloha.

  21. Your website is fantastic. Wish I had found it sooner! I am looking at RT tickets from NYC to Maui on Aug 26th (Sat), returning Sep 4th (Mon but a holiday). For good flight times and short layovers, I am seeing prices of around $1050-1150. Should I wait, or is this the expected price given the dates/route? Thank you so much for your time and advice.

    1. Hi Andrea.

Thank you. $933 on American on your dates with quick connection. If you have date flexibility, then 8/23-9/5 is $803 with a good connection.

      Enjoy Maui.

      Aloha.

  22. Aloha,
Living in the center of the US can make it hard to find affordable and comfortable ways to get to Hawaii. If you could, please offer your advice on the best ways you have seen to travel to the islands (any) from non-major cities like where we live in Oklahoma.
We have previously traveled from Oklahoma City to Hawaii, arriving at three different islands, but wonder if flying first to the west coast would be a better idea for better fares. Our next trip will likely be OKC-OGG or OKC-Kona. We are willing to be create getting there if we can save a lot of money. Our favorite thing to do is fly Coach there and Business class back home overnight.
We sure appreciate any information you can provide. Love your helpful website! Mahalo!

    1. Hi Diane.

Concur that it is complicated flying from non-Hawaii gateway cities and getting a good deal. Typically those places don’t ever see sales, only seasonal moderation in prices. If you want to fly via an intermediate gateway stop like San Jose or Seattle, that can certainly work although it comes with hassles associated with checked luggage interlining and the potential of missed connections.

If you want we can try pricing out dates for you both ways and see how it works. Just send some sample dates.

      Aloha.

  23. I just did a survey and was promised two free tickets one I sent 15 friends the info and also thanking Hawaiian Airlines for my tickets when will I receive them.

  24. I am wanting to vacation to Oahu at the end of October of this year, when is the best time to book in your opinion? I was told June or July is that true

  25. Looking for inexpensive interisland flights (HNL-KOA, etc) the end of August through mid-September. Would it be less money to buy interisland flights now in April or wait until the summer arrives to book? Mahalo!

    1. Hi Lisa.

Could be some moderation in price via fare sales – but in reality inter-island prices don’t vary hugely. No harm in waiting unless it is over a holiday or at prime weekend times.

      Aloha.

  26. Looking for deals on Salt Lake City to Honolulu, for two adults, two kids. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!

    1. Hi Sonja.

SLC isn’t doing too well price-wise on flights to Hawaii. Sorry to report that and hopeful of a change for the better.

      Aloha.

  27. I am flying out of Springfield MO on July 25 to Maui and right now the price is $1179 RT. Should I book or wait to see if price falls. It has went up $80 since March… Thanks for your help.

    1. Hi Shelly.

Would give that less than 50% odds of coming down at all, but you can probably safely wait and see for those dates. In August fares drop by nearly $200.

      Aloha.

  28. Hello!

Looking to buy tickets from SFO to HNL 9/21-9/26. Current price I can find is $468 RT per person. Should I wait a little longer? I’m getting more and more anxious the longer I wait lol

BEAT OF HAWAII is awesome btw, it helps so much!! Thanks for your time!

    1. Hi Leah.

Thank you. Found $463 on just checking. There is the possibility of it coming down to about $400. But that’s no guarantee. If you’re more comfortable buying now, that is the most you have to lose.

      Aloha.

  29. Looking for flights for a trip to Maui from 07/19/17 to 07/25/17…. should I book the flights now? Will the rate be lower if I wait a little longer?

  30. We are planning a trip to Maui July 21 through August 1. We are leaving out of Springfield Missouri and flying to Maui. Flights are over $1000 right now. Do I lock it in or wait?

  31. We’ve just booked for Maui (OGG) this year and hope to see flights from Phoenix(PHX)around $500-600 and I know it’s still early to look for flights but seeing them at $1000 RT either on HAL or AA. Is this another crazy year like 3 years ago where prices never did come down? Thoughts?

  32. Aloha,

Was wondering if you could please offer some advice on purchasing upcoming airfare to Maui. Looking for travel dates in October from Washington DC area to Maui. We normally pay around 600.00, but prices this year have not dropped below the 800.00 mark with terrible connections and long flight times. Do you foresee any upcoming fall sales and should we wait to purchase? Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

    Mahalo

  33. Hi. Looking for 5 of us to come to Hawaii week of 13 Nov. Probably leaving Sat before or if its cheaper to fly another day. No island in mind so open for suggestions thank you!!!! 🙂

  34. I am trying to find flights to Honolulu from any airport in New York City or New Jersey for June 17,2017 to June 25,2017. They have all been a thousand and up. should I wait until mid April? Thank You Elsa

    1. Hi Elsa.

That is the expected price for those dates and route, and it will not go down by waiting.

      Aloha.

  35. Hello –

I’m planning on traveling to Maui 8/1-8/7 from San Francisco. What do you think the average price round trip would be? Right now, on Hawaiian airlines it’s averaging 800 RT. Also, when do you think I should purchase my tickets by?
    Many thanks in advance!

    1. Hi Jaimie.

Fares are running $629 on multiple carriers today. Not a bad price at all for those dates. Would consider locking at that price. Could improve if you wait with target of low $400’s, which is what it becomes as of mid-August. Changes of that happening are less than 50%.

      Aloha.

  36. I am looking for at 2 tickets RT from Oakland to Maui from October 12-22,2017. Right now I am finding tickets for about $475 each. Will there be a better time to book our flights or will this be about what the pricing will be?

  37. I’m looking to book a honeymoon early 2018. Money is tight, but we really want to go to Hawaii. Comming from Minneapolis, MN, what would be our best bet for dates and islands/activities to do Hawaii on a budget? I’m trying to read up on everything, but I’m giving myself information overload.

    Thanks for help,
    Gordon

    1. Hi Gordon.

Flying from MSP to Hawaii is rarely cheap, maybe not even reasonable. For early 2018 your best dates are well before and after spring break. We also highly recommend the Hawaii Revealed guidebooks for activities and general travel information. They are the defacto standard of Hawaii guides.

For flights, expect to spend high $600’s to high $800’s, depending on number of connections and duration primarily.

      Aloha.

      Aloha.

  38. We are looking to go to Kaui next January. Tickets are currently $1,000. When is the best time to book flights?

    1. Despite what this site claims, “Flights to Hawaii remain at inflation adjusted low prices. That’s great news for 2017 Hawaii vacations. Recent competition and strong discounting on many routes are resulting in cheaper than normal flights to Hawaii”, we have never seen flights this expensive from the West Coast to Hawaii. We go to the islands fairly frequently, and have never seen prices average $1000RT. One should expect to find prices from the West Coast averaging $500RT. Despite oil prices being lower, the airlines haven’t passes that savings on to its customers. The price gouging has continued since the Fall when we started looking at rates to Maui. Sorry, I would normally say look for cheaper rates within your 3month window before departure, but it looks like they are going to keep their fares sky high this year. We got a flight to Europe from CA. for the same price as they are charging to Hawaii. Sorry Hawaii commerce, not this year. Crazy.
