I am always seriously disappointed that none of the best airfare deals ever include Chicago.
How can flights from Boston get deals but never Chicago? After 20 years of flying to Hawaii, we are ready to give it up due to always expensive flights out of Chicago.

Aloha! We are traveling from the PHL area to Kauai in mid August(2020). We want to stop in Oahu for a couple of days to see Pearl Harbor otw. I’ve been reading your comments and signed up for alerts, but not sure if it’s cheaper to try and fly direct to Oahu or to fly somewhere in CA, THEN fly to Oahu. We plan on staying 2 nights then hopping to Kauai for the rest of the trip. Can you recommend the best economical way fly? We’re def Ok doing ‘one-way’ trips.Thanks in advance!

Generally it is problematic to include a stopover unless it is true stopover, that due to luggage checking and possible security re-screening. Not likely to save money either.
It looks like the price will be in the $600’s RT plus the inter-island. Probably best to book about 3 months in advance.

For example, splitting the reservations (DTW – OAK, then OAK – HNL), one-way, etc. I still find the cost is over $1800 for all airlines. We are looking to fly from May 24, 2020 – May 31, 2020. About $750 RT for your dates. Other dates are as little as about $500 this winter and that could extend until Spring. But you are flying on holiday weekend. Not sure your dates will improve.

That’s your call. Those dates will be released soon so you can wait if you want to fly SWA. Or book sooner with another carrier (you’ll have to wait a few more days to be within any carrier 330 day booking window. Either way will be expensive for those dates. Perhaps $900 RT.

Southwest ONLY goes to Hawaii from California. To do another flight you have to call and set up to travel from your point to California then from there to Hawaii. You cannot do it online.

You can’t have it both ways unfortunately: chose 3 of the most expensive times to visit and expect a deal. You can try using SW miles, but otherwise, it will be expensive. Maybe cheapest is 4/6-4/12 into one island and out of the other (plus interisland) at $500 on multiple airlines.

I live in Atlanta. 2 years ago I was able to purchase deal from AA with 1 STOP for $375 RT from ATL to Honolulu (dates: JAN-20 to JAN 28). I was hoping Southwest would have similar deal. Unfortunately not yet. Maybe if they allow 737 in the sky in January things might change.
Anything look good from ATL to Maui January or February for 4?

Last May we flew RT from San Jose to Kauai for $420 per person. We’re already checking for May of 2020 and are seeing fares in the $525-600 range. Should we wait them out and see if they go down in the future?

Not very good pricing overall. There is a $443 RT, 1-stop on Delta, the first week of December, returning the second week. Other than that most starts just over $500 on multiple carriers. No reason to expect it to improve.

Thanks for all your content, such great information! We are planning to Maui from Ohio in June 2020. Since we are so far east, our plan of action is to add an additional travel day onto each end of the trip in order to take advantage of Southwest fares. We are basically planning to book flights between California and Ohio round trip, and wait for Southwest to release more flights early next year in order to book from California to Maui. Do you think this is a good method?

Thanks! Yes that’s a good plan. The only thing to add is that airlines with try their hardest not to compete with rock bottom prices during the peak of summer, or at least to do so to a lesser degree. Who knows at this point how successful they will be. Next summer should, however, be significantly cheaper from the Southwest departure cities than normal, that’s for sure.

Next year is hard to predict. Here’s why. While we don’t expect more flights in that market, the additional SWA flights starting in January and those soon to be announced from San Diego could have a ripple effect. Having said that, $700 is the normal fare for spring break. So probably won’t go higher, and might or might not improve by waiting.

For a fast 2-flight trip, it is going to cost in the low $800’s, and that is available now. If you want cheaper, but longer duration and more stops, that is currently about $100 less, and if you want it could be $200 less. That could happen at any point.
