Remember when the Hawaiians declared that they had sacrificed one island ( i.e. Oahu late 1970’s) and that they would not sacrifice another ? Yet based on the above article and enumeration of the extravagant ownership of properties by the “rich & famous ” celebrities; the Hawaiian Islands have become their playground and an extension of the state of California.
Sadly the majority of the newcomer hau’olis have not grasped their contribution to the commercialization and desecration of the Hawaiian culture.
I stayed on the island of Lanai in the late 1980s when there was only 1 hotel in lanai city . I believe it only had 14 rooms. I stayed with a friend in a private residence on the island. He knew the only police officer on the island and i was shown their jail which was about the size of an outhouse. I spent 2 weeks there and drove down to a beach daily. Now they have other hotels that have spoiled that little paradise.
