  1. Awesome news. I just booked flights for 10/23 to 10/29 to Maui (with flexible change arranges from HA). Sure hope that a quick C0vid test can be available in the SF Bay Area before then.

  2. Well, this is interesting. “US Department of Justice indicating earlier today that they do not believe that Hawaii’s 14-day period will be deemed constitutional.”
Yet at the same time, NY, NJ and CT have announced new 14-day quar antines for incoming travelers from “hot spots” in the US. And right now the number of hot spots is increasing rapidly.
Looks like the DoJ is going to be playing whack-a-mole. Also this is Barr’s politicized DoJ. Even the conservative-dominated Supreme Court doesn’t agree with Mr. Barr on certain things. One suspects that (1) the DoJ comment is politically motivated and (2) HI (along with NY, NJ, CT and other states) is going to win this one if they choose to take that route.
Finally, there’s the question of how many people want to get on a plane filled with possible disease carriers and fly at least 6-7 hours each way (much longer if not from the West Coast), and wear a mask. Or sit next to someone who has decided not to wear a mask. This “opening” is just the beginning. Here in CA we’ve seen people ignoring all the rules and as a result the number of cases (and, more importantly, hospitalizations) is soaring. Also in AZ, TX, and other states. HI had better prepare for a real deluge of cases.

  3. If you’re a resident of Hawaii and you visit the mainland do you need to get a C0vid test prior to returning to Hawaii?

  4. Great News!!!
I have a question, I am arriving in Hawaii mid July am I able to present a test to avoid Quarantine?

    1. Hi Gina.

This is set to go into effect on August 1, not before. Of course, that could change.

      Aloha.

  5. Hope to join you mid September 🙂
Now to just find out where to be tested. Thank you for keeping us updated.

    1. Hi Joanne.

Thanks. Yes, that is definitely the question of the day – how to coordinate this testing.

      Aloha.

  6. Well this is good although the testing is still concerning to me. I mean results aren’t instant. And testing is sporadic.

  7. If we want to vacation on the islands. We have to be tested at our state 72 hours prior to travel? Is there any rules about mask wearing at the resort pools and beaches. I was hoping to vacation sometime in late September with my family.
Thanks in advance for your response.

    1. Hi Vu.

Yes to avoid the 14-day period you will need that testing. There are no rules we are aware of regarding masks at resort pools or beaches. More information will be forthcoming, so stay tuned with us for that.

      Aloha.

  8. I’m glad to see that the Governor has come around a bit on this, but the fact that testing is required but not available on the island (or many other places) will still amount to a travel restriction for some of us.

I’m from rural Ohio and we can’t get tested anywhere near here, but have had our September 1 trip paid for since January. Traveling with three children also makes this interesting, as the threat of being quar antined if any one of them were to test positive is a real issue for us. I’m curious to hear about the cost of these tests, since I’ll have to multiply that by 5. If they are going to require the tests, those tests should be available everywhere, or at least on island. I’d also think that we would want these tests to be more reliable before we… rely on them.

The Feds are right, most of what has happened with the quar antine and most of what is being proposed is an unconstitutional restriction on travel between the states, interstate commerce, and this kind of regulation by the state has been preempted by congress. Cold comfort to those of us with scheduled trips and who are not symptomatic.

    1. Allow me to share this with you:

To all Freedom-Loving Americans who can’t stand to lose any of their precious Liberty because of C0VID-19 quarantines and restrictions:
      IF…You agree in writing that:
–You will accept denial of treatment for C0VID-19,
–If you do receive treatment you will be last in line,
–You will pay from your own pocket for any treatment received, and post a substantial bond, in advance, to ensure payment,
–You are liable for civil and criminal penalties for any people you infect,
–You hold harmless anyone who defends their right to health and safety,
THEN: By all means act out your libertarian desires.
BUT: Don’t get within six feet of me or anyone I hold dear. Your freedom to be selfish ends at my perimeter.
Note: Anyone who has any kind of infectious, communicable, or contagious disease in California commits a crime if that person exposes him or herself to others. This crime is punishable as a misdemeanor offense. Check your state for similar laws

  9. Thanks for posting this so quickly! I watched the news conference live, and it all seems to be pretty straightforward…which is nice, after so much back and forth for so long. While I’m MORE than ready to re-book my next trip to my home away from home and I’m totally on board with the need for testing prior to travel, I’ll be curious to see how the locals feel about this, and if they feel they are ready to accept tourists once again. Thanks again for always keeping us updated!
