  1. Mahalo for the current update! We are still confused. I guess, for our late April trip to Maui, we are still planning on getting a COVID test within 72 hours of our departure from Oakland to Hawaii. This will be IN ADDITION to us having our 2nd COVID VACCINE injection 2 weeks prior to our departure date. Here’s why I’m confused. After 2 vaccine shots, and then after 2 weeks after that, of course our COVID test will be negative so what’s the point? We are following the news and read BOH every time you email us a new story! It’s a shame about Kauai, as their economy is really doing poorly.

    1. Hi Steven.

Yes good news today on Kauai. Right now there is no exception for vaccinated travelers. Testing is the only way to avoid quarantine, except for those who have recovered from COVID within the past 90 days. That exception for vaccinations will come, and it could be either any day or week to months away. We can’t say, but like you, we hope it can be sooner than later.

      Aloha.

  2. Sadly politicians are always willing to let their state and residents be destroyed for their own benefit …

  3. Ugh, I hope all is figured out and Kauai joins the travel program by August. It will be the 4th time having to change plans if not. Next month will mark 1yr of my father-in-laws passing (cancer not covid). And all we wanted to do was take our children to the island in remembrance of him, see what family members are left, take his family’s historical documents to the Grove Farm and enjoy where my husband grew up visiting family.

  4. The total lack of benchmarks or timelines leaves travelers with no good options. I’ve got a couple more weeks to decide whether or not to cancel my June vacation to Kauai (or lose a lot of money if it doesn’t work out). At this point, I’ve pretty much lost hope.

  5. Not just summer! I’m thinking our September-October trip to Kauai with interisland hops to Oahu on weekends is also looking very doubtful.

  6. Hello and thank you for your continued updates. We are planning a trip from California to Oahu and Maui to see friends on both islands at the end of June. Besides your wonderful site, what resources do you please recommend for the latest updates with testing and vaccinations? I am most concerned about our inter-island travel as we will only be on Waikiki for three days. before heading to Maui.
    Aloha,
    Cynthia

  7. The only new news is that 1286 passed. And if the Gov. and Lt.Gov. cannot agree together on the travel restrictions, then we are really going nowhere.

  8. We are planning on traveling to Maui in April and we’re very disappointed by the Governor’s lack of caring for the Hawaiian citizens financial welfare. We will get tested by the site set up by Southwest Airlines so the 72 hour turn around is no longer a concern. My concern is for the businesses on Maui. It has been a year since many of the citizens have had a regular paycheck. What is the Governor thinking?

  9. I do have a Kona trip planned May 13-18, but it is highly
Tentative. I have kept the reality that it is highly likely to be cancelled in the back of my head since I rebooked the trip from 2020.
I am 100% able to agree that the confusion is causing me concern. I just do not want to arrive to be told something different than I already believe is the situation.
I have been vaccinated and was hoping that there would be some exception for those vaccinated. If we, as a community, are not accepting vaccinations as a cue to return to some form of normalcy, we truly are in this for the extended haul.
Good luck with all of this over there! I may make my way there eventually.

  10. No more Love’s bakery. We bought a lot of their bread and buns through the years. 230 people to be laid off. But, better to be SAFE; it’s only money.
