  1. A group of senior ladies will be traveling to Hawaii for two weeks in April. We have the first week booked from April 6-13 through our timeshare (Interval) in Oahu. Would like to book the second week in Maui…or if we cant get Maui, either Kuai or the big island of Hawaii. We will be flying from Pittsburgh to somewhere in California for a few nights so we can adjust to time change and airtime on plane. Which airport in California usually has the cheaptes rates? We will probably fly into LAX and perhaps drive down to San Diego or upstate toward santa barbara or monterey. Also if you could please provide any insight into avoiding the higher Easter rates (think its April 20). Thanks so much….

    1. Hi Carolyn.

San Diego usually has very good rates, and LA doesn’t do badly either, and that could even improve by then. You probably should be booking about the first of the year. Stay far into the second half of April to avoid any conflict with Spring break.

      Aloha.

      1. Thanks so much for replying and for the great advice. We have a timeshare and can book through interval. I’ve been looking for a “getaway” for the past 4 months but no luck. Have you had any experience booking through any of the other options (e.g., red week, vrbo, etc. Ideally, we’d like to do a week in Maui as well. We would need a two bedroom/2 bath condo. Any particular areas on Maui you recommend or a few names of condos. Thanks again.

        1. Hi Carolyn.

Accommodations obviously aren’t our focus. What we can add is that often managers/owners list across various platforms so it is very common to find the same listing on a manager’s website, Airbnb and Vrbo. We don’t have any specific recommendations, but a guide book might help in that direction.

          Aloha.

  2. Have recently found your website and love the emails I get, thanks for the timely updates. I’m planning a trip to Maui from Sacramento in 2020 and are flexible on dates. Due to the sale prices I’m seeing for Oct 2019 with Hawaiian Airlines I’m wondering if October would be a better month to travel than May for next year? I would book our condo long before the air fare. Also, is there a better time to buy airline tickets, 6-8 months ahead or wait for a sale? Thanks for any help you can offer.

    1. Hi Pam.

Those two months are generally speaking equal in every way. Deals, weather too. Best time to find sales is about three months in advance. Mid-week travel will be significantly cheaper. It is certainly better to obtain air before accommodation, when that is feasible.

      Aloha.

      Aloha.

  3. Aloha

I keep reading about the Southwest fares being/going to be much cheaper than other airlines. I just completed checking the costs for Oakland to Maui in September and the website is indicating $600/person one way for a total of $2,400 total. Doesn’t sound like any kind of deal to me. Hawaiian Airlines are offering $530/person return from Sacramento on the same dates. Appreciate all the information you provide everyone. Helps identify good deals from bad.

    1. Hi James.

As we’ve said many times, the competition really never got started. There should be interesting times ahead once the Max planes return and Southwest can add the routes they desire.

      Aloha.

  4. Are the prices quoted in the main body of your email round trip or oneway prices? I am unclear on that. When I pull up (for example SAC to KOA) the prices look like they are double what you present in the body of the email. Sorry for being confused; could you email me and let me know if the price calendar is RT and the prices quoted in the email or oneway?

    Many Thanks,
    mjs

    1. Hi Michael.

It is in the bullets: “Prices listed below are each way including all taxes and fees.”

      Aloha.

  5. Hello lovely people at the Beat! Thank you so much for always giving us the most up to date info on Hawaii travel. There is no other site like it. I have a few questions. I will be traveling Boston to Kona 5/13/20, Kona to Honolulu 5/20/20 then Honolulu to Boston 5/27/20. All are Wednesdays but our schedule is extremely flexible. We have also considered switching and doing Honolulu first then flying back home from Kona. Do you have any general tips? I understand we shouldn’t even try booking travel until we are a few months away. Thanks again and I can’t wait to come back. It’s been 10 years and I miss it every day. 🤙🌺🌴

    1. Hi Erin.

Thanks so much! So best price for that could be in low $500’s, but getting that will mean waiting quite some time. Perhaps until after first of year. Won’t matter which way you go in terms of Kona or Honolulu first.

      Aloha.

  6. Hi, First of all, thank you so much for all the information you share!! It has been super helpful. My daughter recently moved to Honolulu. She is a schoolteacher there and wants to come home for Christmas. She would like to travel round-trip from Honolulu to San Diego from Saturday, December 21 through Monday, December 30. I can’t seem to find any cheap fares. Will the prices go down any? Or should I just bite the bullet and buy her ticket now? Thank you so much for any advice or help you can give me with this. Shelly

    1. Hi Shelly.

Thank you. $547 RT nonstop. That’s really a great price for those dates. It will not go down and we would suggest buying now.

      Aloha.

      1. Thank you so much for getting back to me. What airline was that on? And what site do you use to book it? Or directly with the airline? Thank you again!

      2. I’m not able to see the deals mention on the Hawaiian airline on the dates mention. Am I not clicking the right places?

  7. We are looking for flights out of the bay area airports or Sacramento October 12-19 (not flexible on dates) to HNL. So far best I can find is about $515 (Southwest out of SJC). Should I be holding out for a better price?

  8. Aloha, our family has booked a two week vacation on Maui and the Big Islands. I’m waiting for some good deals on the air fares. Could you give me some advice or good prospects? Leaving 12/24/2019 SMF SJC or OAK (prefer SMF) and arrival can be either OGG or ITO. We have mileageplus to get rewards tickets for inter islands. Return date is 1/5/2020. Date can be flexible for 1-2 days. Thank you so much!

    1. Hi Ronnie.

As you are undoubtedly aware, you can’t come to Hawaii at Christmas and expect deals at the same time. It is the singularly most expensive (and most complicated) time to be here. Issues in terms of cost and availability should be expected, including air, accommodations, restaurants, and activities.

Airfares out of SMF starting at $768 and up. Other bay area airports up to $50 cheaper, so probably not worth it. Would suggest buying tickets, accommodations and car ASAP for reason stated above.

      Aloha.
