  1. Hi there,

SFO/OAKLAND to OGG mid September. Best time to buy? Current price is $438. Wait or purchase?

    Thank you!

  2. Hello, I am glued to this website! Thank you for all the info! I keep re-reading when to buy flights and am still curious. We are flying PDX to LIH 10/06/16 to 10/13/16 and prices remain around 550/person. Will these prices drop if we wait until early to mid summer?

    Thank you!!

    1. Hi Christiane,

Thanks and sorry to not have better news Phoenix and Lihue both remain pricey and there’s nothing we can see that would change that in your time frame. $550 is probably about what it will be.

      Aloha.

        1. Hi Christiane.

So sorry. That was our mistake. $500 fares in that market. Don’t see any indication prices will go lower on that route this fall.

          Aloha.

    2. Hi,
my family and I are traveling to Maui on Oct 8th-15th. Tickets are $539 pp. Should I purchased or wait for a better price?

      Thank you.

      1. Hi Cindy,

You didn’t say – looks like LAX. That market may come down some for those dates. Odds of it being better if you wait are 65%.

        Aloha.

  3. Husband and I are coming to Hawaii from June 6- June 11. We are Flying from BWI and trying to land in KOA. Flights are currently 1200. Will that drop?

Thank you for any help you can provide!

    1. Hi LaShawn,

Starting at $953 on United with 2 stops and reasonable connection times. Return date is the problem – high priced. If you can change dates to earlier in month and mid-week then $700’s possible. May not improve for your dates.

      Aloha.

  4. Hi there,

We plan to honeymoon on Kauai and the Big Island in early October. We are using Alaska Airlines companion passes. Round trip flights from Boston are $900-$1200. Wait or book?!

    Thanks!

    Amanda

    1. Hi Amanda.

      Congratulations.

Early October has $821 fares on AS. Later in month has just over $700 fares. Looks like it should improve by waiting, maybe until early to mid-summer. Availability won’t be a problem.

BTW there’s a long 5-7 hour layover in Seattle.

      Aloha.

  5. Hello,

We will be traveling to Hawaii late Jan from ATL. Pricing that I am seeing now is $950 ish. My question is that normaly the price range or is there a better time to shop?

    Thanks a bunch
    Matt

    1. Hi Matt,

January is high season. It can sometime trend a bit lower if the airlines need. The HNL nonstop is almost always costly – say $1,100RT. With a reasonable connection it is say $950. And with a long connection (20 hours), $750 or so. The more the stops and the longer the duration the cheaper the price. Some chance of price improvement, but wouldn’t see it is likely.

      Aloha.

  6. Currently scheduled to be in Kauai from Aug 8th – 17th. Do you think it would be better to schedule for the 9th instead of the 8th? Planning to fly Alaska from PDX to LIH, looks like layover in either SEA or SAN, currently looking at about $750 per passenger. Book now, or wait?

    1. Hi Greg,

Currently $637 for your dates (8/8-8/17) on Hawaiian with good connection. 9th is more costly. If you wanted to go the following week, United has $501. Don’t foresee it getting better for that week unless towards last minute.

      Aloha.

  7. Hi,

I will be flying to Honolulu in October from Houston, Tx. American Airlines has round trip with 1 stop in Dallas (layover 3.5 hours going and coming) at 1,474.64 (including taxes) for two adults.

Can you please let us know,Is this a good price? Should we book it? Please help? We have a 24 hour hold on the flight. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

    1. Hi Arceli,

First it wouldn’t hurt to wait since availability won’t be an issue. Prices generally aren’t very good in that market and $700’s is the best that’s out there right now. Might improve but might not.

      Aloha.

  8. We are hoping to travel from DTW to OGG next year…March 22-31, 2017. Having to wait to see airfare prices is killing me. What is an average from Detroit that time of year?

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Stacey,

With good connection price will be $800-$900 or so. With bad connection there are going to be fares of $600 or so. We’re talking 12 hours vs. 25 hours.

      Aloha.

  9. Hi there,

My family is planning a trip to Maui from Detroit around Feb. 25, 2017 for 5-7 days. Do you have any advice on the best time to book? Airline flights were just released and the prices appear to be very high. Appreciate any advice you can provide.

    Thank you,
    Mac

    1. Hi Mac.

As we just mentioned to someone else, February is not low season. If there’s discounting is will be if and when airlines see the need. So probably not until late this year. Fares with good connection times are in the $900’s and up to $200 less with very long connections. Might improve – odds of that are say 50/50.

      Aloha.

  10. Hello! I am looking to travel to Honolulu from Norfolk, Va in Spring of 2017 with my 2 sons. The visit will be centered around their Spring break. I am aware that this is an expensive time to travel. Is there a best time to book a flight being this far out that will hopefully allow me savings that a single parent is desperately searching for? Thank you for all ur help!
    Gratefully,
    Nancy

    1. Hi Nancy,

Spring break 2017 dates are still solidifying. Gut call on this is to wait until late summer or early fall. Anticipated price is is the $1,100+ range.

      Aloha.

  11. Aloha, I have been flying to Hawaii from the mainland for many years. Is it my imagination, or are the airlines trending toward using smaller aircraft from LAX and SFO to the islands? Are any airlines more routinely flying the wide body planes to Hawaii? The smaller planes take longer to get there and they’re always so full.

  12. Looking at going to Maui in late February next year. Right now the only deal is free breakfast at a couple resorts. What time would be the best to look at booking the trip.

    1. Hi Doug.

February is generally high season in Hawaii. This year did have some discounting – but a lot as demand remains very high. If there are discounts we wouldn’t expect to see them until fall or later.

      Aloha.

  13. Hi,

I will be traveling to Honolulu at Christmas time. At the moment the prices are around $1250 round trip. When would be a good time to purchase the ticket?

    1. Hi Helena,

Christmas is never discounted (except for slightly lower prices on holidays and eves). Best to buy now.

      Aloha.

  14. Hello,

I’m traveling to Kauai from December 22-29. Just wondering how early to book flights and what are most reasonable flight prices during this time of year?

    1. Hi Sofia,

Prices are from high $700’s to low $800’s. As expected. Best to book now.

      Aloha.

  15. Hello!

I’m so glad I came across your site. Thank you for all the useful information! We will be flying MSP to HNL then to OGG and back in late September, early October for a wedding. It appears we should wait to book until maybe later in May or even later into the summer?

Thanks again for all that great info!
    Crystal

    1. Hi Crystal Paul,

Currently $632 on United. Would buy that right away if possible Great price and good connection.

      Aloha.

  16. Hello, I emailed you several days ago regarding travel to Maui from Chicago in June. I’m looking at June 7th thru the 23rd. Flexible a day or 2. Tickets are over $900 . My question is do you see a drop in prices in the next couple of weeks? This the highest I’ve ever paid in the dozen times I’ve been there. Should I be patient or bite the bullet and pay it before it goes higher? Your advice much appreciated! Thank you!

    1. Hi Tammy,

We answered your question soon after you asked it. Here it is again:

      “Hi Tammy,
It is worth waiting to see. We’d give odds of going down at 60%.
      Aloha.”

      1. Thank you for your reply! I actually got the fare for $700! Bam ! The fare war was only 3 days. Back up to $985. You gotta jump on it when it goes down. It’s hard to be patient! Thank you again! Aloha!

  17. Hi, I am looking to travel to Hawaii from Washington D.C. from Aug 14-15, 2016. Currently prices start at $943 Round trip. As I have never been to Hawaii before,Please let me know if you think this is a good price.
    Any assistance would be appreciated

    Thank you, Mike

    1. Hi Mike,

$900 or so is about the best price we usually see for the nonstop. With stops and someone long stopover, we see prices at just under $650. Hope that helps.

      Aloha.

  18. Thank you for your advice and FYI for fellow travelers from Chicago to Kona. We booked decent flights on Alaska Air for $836 RT one stop, arrive early afternoon and short layovers. Fare is a code share with American. Last I checked the fare is still available. Depart Tuesday May 24 return Friday June 3.

  19. Hi,

I am travelling to Maui for m Seattle on June 14-June 28. What can I expect for airfare say from Hawaiian Airlines (currently showing $774), does it typically go up or down, should I purchase the ticket now?

  20. Hello… in mid October I’m planning my first trip to Oahu this year. I will be leaving from Atlanta. Thank you very much … Anita

    1. Hi Anita,

Plan to pay just under $700 for 1-stop and an extra $200+ for nonstop.

      Aloha.

  21. Aloha,
We are looking to fly back to Honolulu to visit family sometime in Aug or late Oct. We are flexible on dates. Do you feel it would be cheaper to go in Aug or Oct? Also, have you seen prices lower than $800 Rt from RDU – HNL?
    Mahalo plenty! Sonia & family

    1. Hi Sonia,

Yes there are $605 RT fares with good connections in May, so you may well see those again later in the year. October is probably a little more reliable but likely either will have reasonable fares.

      Aloha.

  22. Looking at flying PHX to HNL 11/9-11/16. Prices most recently have been $560 RT. Would you advise that we buy now or do you think there is a lower target price? Thank you much.

    Aloha

    1. Hi Cheryl,

Unless something changes (and we know of nothing), then that’s what the price has been stuck at. It could vary by a bit (there are $518 fares for spring), but that’s it.

      Aloha.

  23. great website! we’re flying OAK to OGG sept 5-12, 2016. alaska currently at $398 rt. should i book now, or do you think there might be a price drop at some point as september is off season. (hawaiian air is ten bucks cheaper, but alaska offers a later departure flight so we can enjoy our last day 🙂

    thanks a bunch!

    1. Hi Sheila.

Mahalo! Yes we might see up to $60 less if you wait. But having said that, under $400 is a great price so if you’re time is more valuable than the potential for that savings, we’d suggest buying now.

      Aloha.

  24. Hi:

I am planning a trip to Maui, flying into OGG airport from Denver. Leaving October 15th (Saturday) and returning on October 22nd (Saturday). What can I expect the fares to be, and when should I purchase the tickets?

    1. Hi Mike,

That’s $668 RT now and not likely go go much lower if at all. You’d need to fly mid-week to save, in which case target price is $500. When to buy is in post.

      Aloha.

  25. Planning a trip to Maui Aug 13 thru the 20th,I need 12 tickets right away, can you give me your best deal?

    1. Hi Aida,

Are you flying from Portland? $698 nonstop or less with stops on your dates. If you can fly 8/14-8/22 then $559 nonstop on Alaska.

      Aloha.

  26. Hello,

I was wondering if you could tell me what the target price for DFW – Honolulu October 17-21 should be and when the best time to purchase? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

    1. Hi Alicia,

Timing is already in post. Target price on the nonstop is $750. Less if you don’t mind long stopovers (from mid $500’s).

      Aloha.

  27. Traveling from MCI (Kansas City) to KOA (Kona)….want to go around August 17th 2016. Would you purchase the flight now…it’s around $830. Thank you!

  28. Traveling from Buffalo,NY. Would like to know the cheapest times to fly to Hawaii. Thanks for any guidance you can offer

    1. Hi Mark,

The cheapest time is exactly what we’ve written about in post. Target price off-season is $800.

      Aloha.

  29. I’m a grandmother wanting to take two small grandkids to Hawaii to visit their cousins. I’m leaving Wichita, Kansas going to Honolulu. Times: May through July – just a couple days visit.

    1. Hi Melody,

There are fares of approx. $800 through mid-may on American and United. That’s about as good as you’re going to find. In summer, prices are about $1,150.

      Aloha.

  30. My wife and I have made plans to go to Maui on
November 16, 2016. We are from the Boston area and need
advice on the best time to book our flight? I notice
3 weeks ago, United Airlines price for a round trip was $732 per person. Now it’s more than $1,000. Is it too early to book a flight or wait for a better deal? What will be the best route for us? We are not rich and interested in a one stop flight. Our return date is Nov.21. Sorry if I asked to many questions. Any advice is appreciated.

    1. Hi Melvin.

One stop on American is $943 with 13 hour duration. Might improve if you wait, but may not since it is around Thanksgiving. If you want cheaper price then other dates with longer en route stop will work better. Prices can drop into $600’s for 17+ hour duration.

      Aloha.

  31. Looking to go to Honolulu from San Francisco May 23- May 31. Found nonstop on United for $478. Should I book now or see if more spring sales happen next week. Need 6 tickets. Thanks!

    1. Hi Christie,

Sorry you didn’t get it earlier this week when it was $100 less. Do you get our email updates? Hard to say if it will go down – possibly yes – we’d set those adds at 60% if you are patient (which can of course be nerve wracking).

      Aloha.

      1. Yes, but I actually live in Alabama and finally realized it would be cheaper for me to fly to San Fran then Honolulu. Spend a couple days there before going on. By the time I checked, the airfares are where they are now. Still come out better paying it but every bit helps!

  32. Hi there! I am a kindergarten teacher from Northern Minnesota and would like to plan a 20 year anniversary trip for my husband and our 2 close friends. We were thinking later August 2016 or early June 2017 flying out do Fargo or Grand Forks ND or MPLS, MN. We are kind of on a budget…any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Have a great day!

    1. Hi Susie.

Nice plan. So for August 2016 the cheapest (by $300 or more) is MSP. Fares to HNL in $600’s on United or American starting mid-August on. For June 2017 it is way too early. If it is June 2017, you’ll need to be done with your trip by June 8 for good pricing.

      Aloha.

  33. Hi Folks

First off, thanks for all the great info. You guys rock!!!

I’m trying to take 6 people from either Newark or JFK/LGA (but preferably Newark) on Thursday August 25th, 2016 to Oahu. We would like to fly back through LAX on September 1, spend 3 days in LA and then return to Newark on Sunday, September 4th (that’s Labor day weekend by the way). I’ve been following the prices for several months now. Based on your info, I was going to wait until around 90 days out to see if the prices drop but lately I’m seeing a small spike of about $50 in cost on flights from Newark to Oahu on United. Should I be worried or do you think they will come back down and hopefully go down even more so? The prices I had been seeing up until a few days ago was around $862 total for that itinerary which I realize is higher than I would pay if we didn’t take that detour on the way back in LA.

Any info would be much appreciated!

    Tracy

    1. Hi Tracy.

Mahalo! Not sure about your itinerary with layover – as you said, that’s problematic with pricing. It can’t hurt to wait as availability won’t be an issue. Currently $871 on United with good connection or $913 using the nonstop EWR-HNL.

      Aloha.

  34. I am travelling to Honalulu from Boston sometime the week of 9/12. Prices unfortunately just jumped from about 700 to 950….will they go back down?

    1. Hi Joy,

There are $717 fares mid-week currently available in September. Weekends will almost always remain higher.

      Aloha.

      1. I saw those… any chance of prices dropping further if I wait? Or is around 700 what I should expect?

        1. Hi Joy,

There might be fares in the mid to high $600’s if you wait, but not for weekends.

          Aloha.

  35. Traveling mid February 2017 to Oahu from NY /NJ area. Can you please provide air fare costs? Direct flights of possible.

  36. Aloha!

Planning a family trip between end of August and end of October to beautiful Kauai!! Flexible dates.
Flying out of Vegas into Lihue… Seeing HA at $640/$689. I think this is a reasonable price. Do you expect them to go much lower in the next few months? What is the Las Vegas target amount? Your recommendation is much appreciated!

Thank you so much! Love your website and get your email updates!

    Mahalo!

    1. Hi Gina,

Thank you! Target price is low $600’s. For most dates it looks like you’d do better by waiting. Availability will not be an issue.

      Aloha.

  37. On deal sites sometimes I see “only 7 seats left at this price”. How accurate is that? I feel it’s only a scare tactic to get you to buy ASAP but I don’t want to lose out on a deal.

    -Christina

  38. I have a family of six and we are planning a trip to Honolulu December 22 – 26. We are flying out of Dallas. I’ve seen the airfare increase from 867 to over 1000. Will these prices continue to increase? Should I purchase tickets now or later?

    Thank you.

    1. Hi Nicole,

$913 in 12 hours on Delta with one stop or $1288 on American in 8 hours nonstop. Very much high season dates that aren’t likely to come down. Suggest buying now.

      Aloha.
