  1. Help please.
Going to Maui June 26th to July 3rd, must fly Alaska. Do you think the prices will go down at all if we wait a bit longer?
    Thank you!

    1. Hi Kathy.

No they will not and there could be no availability or even higher prices. That is the most expensive time other than Christmas.

      Aloha.

  2. Aloha- Thanks for a previous response, you are the BEST on the internet!! We’re travelling from OAK-HILO May 27 and was told to wait for lower prices. Wondering if the Extra Comfort seats on Hawaiian Air drop when their Coach seats drop?

Mahalo and cant wait for some sunshine cuz the rain is awful in Cali 🙁

    1. Hi Tess.

Thank you. Extra comfort is just an additional option, priced at $80 each way on that route. You add that to whatever fare you purchase during the checkout process. Hope that helps.

      Aloha.

  3. Hello,

Travelling to Honolulu December 2017/Jan 2018 when is the best time to purchase tickets leaving from Toronto, Canada?

    Thank you in advance!

  4. Hello!! My amazing in-laws are gifting our whole family with a trip to Hawaii for Christmas this year. It’s my first trip to Hawaii and I’m beyond excited. We are flying from PDX to Kona 12/22-12/27. Flights are around $1,500 per person right now. Do you think those will drop and if so, when is a good time to buy? I don’t want to see them go up at all – but I only have one companion pass to use and four tickets to buy. Thank you in advance for the advice!! 🙂

    1. Hi Kelsey.

Looks like $987-$1048 for your exact dates and route. Price is as expected and should be bought now.

      Aloha.

  5. Hello,

I am actually looking for packages to Hawaii for beginning of next year. Want to take my son for a graduation gift. Is it best to start looking now or wait until time gets closer?

    Thank you!

  6. Hello,
Do you know when is the best time to purchase airline tickets from LAX to HNL for a family of 5? 3 adults and 2 children? Also, Do you know of any reputable travel agencies that will accent partial payment or possibly payment plan?

    Thank you for your reaponse.

    1. Hi David.

There was a website that was doing that – don’t recall the name and don’t find it in search. They were charging like 30% APR interest it seemed. You didn’t indicate your dates. Having said that the answer to your question is already contained in the post.

      Aloha.

  7. Aloha!
Thank you for all this great advice! I’m looking to fly Hawaiian Airlines on 8/31 and missed a great deal of $442 RT. Right now it’s $566…do you anticipate the price will go back down, or should I book at this current rate now?

    Thanks much!

    1. Hi David.

Yes it is very early still for late summer/fall ticket sales. Hang on a while. Only potential issue is that you’re traveling on Labor Day weekend.

      Aloha.

  8. Flying from Melbourne Australia to Honolulu in June or july Which is a cheaper month to fly with Jetstar or Hawaiian airlines

    1. Hi Grace.

Jetstar has some $486 RT mid-week dates in both June and July. Use their availability calendar to find.

      Aloha.

  9. We are traveling to Kona May 13-21 from Portland Oregon. When is the best time to purchase tickets. Thank you for your input.

    1. Hi Cathy.

$562 on multiple airlines. Generally speaking, your dates have flexibility to drop to about $460 if you wait, but as you’re flying Saturday, it may not improve by waiting. For example, 5/14-5/22 is already $50 cheaper than your dates.

      Aloha.

  10. We are a family of 4 traveling from SFO to HNL July 29 to August 14. According to what I read online, it said booking 4 months in advance was best but I know that we are traveling during peak season. Currently, airfare is $737 round trip. Do you see the price dropping anytime in the future or do we need to grab our tickets now before they increase again. A week ago, airfare was $621 round trip and I’m kicking myself for not booking then… Really appreciate your insight!

    Thanks for your help.

    1. Hi Sheryl.

Consider changing advisers. Can you go and return a day later? If so then $631 nonstop on United. Your dates are currently pricing at $681. Either way not unexpected or especially nigh prices for your dates. These will continue to go up and down a bit within a rather limited range. Availability is probably not a big issue as it is rather late in summer. You added a note about Oakland being okay, but that isn’t helping unfortunately.

      Aloha.

  11. Hi, I love your site and advice! Thank you for all the great information. My family plan to fly from Oakland to Honolulu on Aug 31 thru Sept 4th for my brother’s wedding. We recently missed the $442 round trip price and have been checking daily on their website. Do you think it will get that low again, or should we book now at the $556 price?
    Thank you much!!
    Christie

      1. Thank you for that info! If I wanted to try and fly with Hawaiian Airlines, though, do you anticipate the $566 price to drop again, or should I just book it now?

        Mahalo!

        1. Hi Christie.

Unknown. Bird in hand vs one in the bush. It is labor day weekend. If you’re set on those exact dates it might or might not improve.

          Aloha.

  12. Looking at taking family to Oahu December 27th for 10 days flying out of Omaha. We can find packages around 7500 for flights and hotel Hilton Waikiki beach. Is this a good price or will it increase/decrease?
    Thank you!

    1. Hi Julie.

We won’t comment on packages but will say that they are not at all likely to save you any money. Perhaps however you find that more convenient. The airfare for your dates will run $1,000 to $1,100 depending on total transit time. It isn’t likely that price will come down unless you have flexibility on dates. We can’t look out beyond returning January 6, since those aren’t yet loaded to the airlines’ availability But definitely moving out in time will reduce the price. You might consider waiting a week or so so you can view more availability before deciding.

      Aloha.

  13. Hello

We are planning a trip right at the summer/fall season crossover according to your website. Aug 11-20. Will we see airline prices drop for this time frame from SEA>Maui? $750 seems really high right now.

thanks so much as I have been receiving your newsletter for 3 years now and this is finally a week we can go.

    1. Hi Alan.

Based on what we see today, lowest fare you can expect is about $500. There are already low $500’s airfares in that time frame, but not your exact days. Flexibility will get the deal worm. Best prices on Hawaiian are starting 8/16. Yes that pricing could move to earlier days in August but that is definitely an unknown.

      Aloha.

  14. Aloha! We are coming to Oahu in October for our 50th anniversary and am curious if any of the airlines offer discount pricing on Enhanced (Premium) Economy. Medical condition requires greater leg room. First Class/Business class kind of out of our price range this time. Our departure city will be New Orleans (MSY).

    Thanks and Mahalo

    1. Hi Giff.

Domestically, as you called it enhanced economy is often just an upgrade you can pay for when buying economy tickets. Like United economy plus as an example. Same with Hawaiian extra comfort. The cost if much much less than first class. Typically about $100 more each way.

      Aloha.

  15. My family and I plan to travel on 8-4-17-8-13-17. Just wondering when the best time would be to book flights?

  16. Looking to fly 2 people from Norfolk, VA (ORF) to Honolulu or the Big Island in September or October. What’s the best price we might expect to get?

  17. We are going to Kona on March 10th, and plan to fly over to Lihue on the 15th for the remainder of our vacation. We have booked flights in and out of Hawaii, but we’re wondering when we should be booking our inter-island flight. Thank your so much for you help! BTW, we’ve been subscribers for years. Love your site! We pass it on often.

  18. Aloha Beat of Hawaii,

My husband and I are traveling from the Bay Area (SFO or OAK) to Lihue, Kauai during the first week of May. When would you recommend that we purchase our flights? And around what price range would you say I am looking at?

Thank you so much in advance!

    1. Hi Jaymie.

Looks like about $550 at the moment. Suggest waiting until the next found of fare sales for later this spring. It shouldn’t be much longer. Target price is mid-$400’s from Oakland.

      Aloha.

  19. Hello,
We will be traveling to the Big Island from Phoenix Oct 7th – 14th. Should I book flights now or wait to see if the price comes down?

    Thank you,
    Jill

    1. Hi Jill.

Suggest waiting. Best price is going to be high $500’s and right now it is price in at about $100 more.

      Aloha.

  20. Hello! A friend is looking to travel to Oahu sometime between March-May, lowest price possible; dates of travel & day of week is flexible for best price. What do you recommend as far as cheapest time to travel, and best time to book? Thanks so much, in advance.

  21. What is the best time of year to buy a flight from LAX to Maui, traveling over New Years week with reasonable flight departures/arrival times?

  22. I’m looking to book a flight from Philadelphia to Honolulu, April 20 to May 1, for 5 adults.
Not sure if I should book my tickets now or wait another couple of weeks. I’m currently getting prices between $974 to $872, is that about right? or should I wait?

    1. Hi Julie.

Prices are really high in that market. About $1,000 with a good connection. Could come down if you wait and probably no hard in doing so since availability should not be an issue for your dates.

      Aloha.

  23. We are planning a family vacation to Maui in June – 10 people – departing LAX or SNA on June 20th and returning on June 30th.
Should we book the flights now – or will the fares go down if we wait?
    Thanks for your help!

    1. Hi Connor.

Suggest booking now. That is peak summer, fares will not go down, and availability could well become an issue.

      Aloha.

    2. Thanks!

Are all the fares the same for all airlines now – or is there an airline with a lower fare than the rest?
      Thanks, again, for your help!

      1. Hi Connor.

There’s no easy answer to that one. They can be the same or they can be different. Depends on route, sales, time of year, etc.

        Aloha.

  24. I will traveling from Michigan to Kona, Hawaii. Thinking of traveling in May for about 4 days there with flexible dates. Just looking at what price range I should be expecting for flights.

    1. Hi Katherine.

About $750 with a very long connection (over 20 hours) or $850+ for a good connection. That’s probably not going to improve.

      Aloha.

  25. Hi – I need to purchase 4 tickets to fly out of PHX to OGG on 05/24 and return 5/31. Tickets were less expensive last month. Should we buy now or wait?

    1. Hi Steptember.

Might come down by about $50 or so if you wait. Probably will not be an issue in terms of availability for your dates.

      Aloha.

  26. Hello, we are a family of 4 looking to fly to the Big Island towards the end of July 2017 from Atlanta Georgia. When would you recommend purchasing the airline tickets to get the best rates? Thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Villa.

The post is all about when to fly for best rates, and unfortunately July isn’t it. About $1,000 RT. Suggest buying now.

      Aloha.

  27. Hello Beat of Hawaii,

What a great website, very informative. After reading the “cheapest time to fly” article, we decided to take your advice and travel to Kona from LAX on
November 7th – 14th. My question is if you could please tell me a good target airfare price for that route and dates. Thank you for any advice you can give me.

    Tricia

    1. Hi Tricia.

Thank you! Great plan. Target price is about $500 and we’d expect to see fall airfares go down by mid-summer, give or take.

      Aloha.

  28. Aloha!

I am getting married on Kauai around the 2nd week in October of this year. I plan to island hop to Maui for the honeymoon after a week on Kauai. Since we are on different islands, I can’t book round trip. From my research thus far, I had read to try to book on Tuesday if possible due to sales and around March/April. Do you agree or have any other recommendations?

    Mahalo in advance,

    Sarahh

    1. Hi Sarah.

Get new information sources. 🙂 The post really you’re commenting from describes it all. Buy approximately mid-summer. No problem flying into one island and out of another at least from the west coast. Tuesday’s – sometimes yes, sometimes no.

      Aloha.

  29. My friends and i are planning on flying to O’ahu on July 10th and we were planning to buy our tickets in march is this a wise decision money wise, or should we wait till June for a cheaper price? total of 8 people are going.

  30. Hi, trying again on this one. What would you say is a good price for roundtrip airfare between (1) LAX and KOA, and (2) PDX and KOA, travel dates 8/5/17 and 8/12/17? Our family has a reunion planned on the Big Island, prices seem quite high right now (and not sure if they will come down until we get closer to August) – current range appears to be between over $800 to $1,000+ roundtrip.

Thanks in advance for your always sage advice!

    1. Hi Robert.

If you need to stick with Saturdays, then $850+ for LA and $750+ for Portland. It is the first half of August and that’s what these posts talk about – it is high season. We would not expect the LA fare to go down. Portland is a little less certain due to more competition in that market. If you can chance from Saturdays, you’ll do better.

      Aloha.

  31. Hello, we are looking at flying to Maui on 9/23 and returning on 10/1. Alaska is $578 and Hawaiian is $588. I’m watching fares weekly to see if they come down. When would you book these flights and do you think they will go lower? Let me know, thanks for your advice!

    1. Hi Michelle.

You didn’t say where you’re flying from – but, it doesn’t matter. Too early for fall airfares. They’ll be out in a few months.

      Aloha.

      1. Sorry, it is from Seattle to Maui. So May/June would be a good time to look? What should we expect to pay???

        1. Hi Michele.

Around $450. Can’t say when – that’s up to the airlines and their needs. Perhaps by mid-summer.

          Aloha.

  32. When is the best time to buy tickets to Kona / Maui for Thanksgiving holiday, traveling out of Anchorage? Waiting too long and all flights are sold out, but tickets right now are PRICEY!

    Thank you!

    Peter

    1. Hi Peter.

As described in the post, Thanksgiving isn’t a time to wheel and deal. Suggest buying now.

      Aloha.

  33. Hi,

Just purchased tickets today from Seattle – Lihue, Dec 21 – 31 on Delta, $863 person. Do you think that was a good deal? Wasn’t sure if a deal would come up for those dates and for a direct flight was considerably cheaper than Alaska, the other direct option. Flights are a good time too!

    Kim

    1. Hi Kim.

The price is fair and availability at the holidays is a big issue. Don’t forget to snag a car and accommodations right away of course.

The airfare has been $700+ at the holidays for decades without exception. You’re sure to have a great time!

      Aloha.

  34. Good afternoon,
My wife and I are going on a trip to Hawaii with another couple. I am planning the entire trip and we are wanting to go in late March or early April. Ideally I have been searching a combination of date from 3/22 – 3/31. We are located in North Carolina and are willing to fly out of RDU or CLT, whatever is the most cost effective.

I am also trying to figure out what the best island is for us to stay on or if we should spilt it up and visit multiple islands. The one thing we are certain of, is that we would like to visit O’ahu to at least visit Pearl Harbor. With this being 2 couples, we think it may be cost effective to do a 2-3 bedroom condo, as opposed to the individual cost of 2 resort rooms. Aside from that, we are wide open and I greatly welcome all suggestions.

    1. Hi Adam.

Your dates are somewhat pricey because of spring break. So expect to spend about $850 and RDU is cheaper most but not all days.

Inter-island takes up a minimum of 1/2 day of your vacation and when doing so, suggest you consider returning directly from another island. A resounding yes on a vacation rental. The only way to go!

      Aloha.

  35. Hello,
I am wanting to take my 2 children (16 & 3) to Honolulu to visit their military uncle & aunt. We would be traveling from Orlando FL. What would be the cheapest month to go, as i am pretty open. Also is there a better day of the week to purchase flights or to fly for the best rate. Looking for flight only, no hotel no car

    Thank you in advance

    1. Hi Rosalynn.

About $750 is typically the best price for spring and fall dates with reasonably fast connections. Midweek. Fall prices haven’t gone down yet. The rest of the information is already in the post.

      Aloha.

  36. Good afternoon ! We’re looking for 4 tickets but can’t fly until after may 26….. should I be buying now or waiting for another deal/ fare sale?

Flying to big island from San Jose / Oakland/ San Fran or Sacramento.
    Thank you!!!

    1. Hi Steph.

Especially if you’ll be returning within first week of June then yes do wait.

      Aloha.

  37. Two questions please:

1- I live is SF Bay Area – which is cheapest place to fly out of? SFO, Oakland or Sac. (I think Hawaiian Air has Economy Plus only from OAK)

2- We are going May 27 to June 4. I saw low flights last month and should have booked then but didn’t and now they’re more than doubled. Will they drop at all before May?

    Mahalo, Tess

    1. Hi Tess.

Definitely not Sacramento. Usually Oakland or San Jose are cheapest. And yes, prices should come back down again for your dates.

      Aloha.

  38. Hello, I am looking to book flights from San Francisco or San Jose to Honolulu 12/21/17-12/27/17. I’m not sure what would be a good deal on those flights. Should I be looking to book now or should I hold out? I’ve never booked a flight during Christmas and really don’t have anything to compare it to. Thank you so much for your help and advice!

    1. Hi Erica.

Just over $650 from San Jose and about $50 or so more if you fly from SFO. Reasonable prices for your dates. Suggest buying tomorrow (first date that 12/27 return will be available for purchase).

      Aloha.

  39. Hi there My wife and I are traveling from Michigan to Maui from the 2nd of August and hoping to return on the 6th for a friend’s wedding. Most airports in Michigan are reasonable for travel for us. Could you help with a ballpark airfare for us, or when we should be expecting to book our flights please? Thank you so much in advance.

    Chris

    1. Hi Chris.

Budget $1,100 for your dates. Save about $70 if you return a day later. Price is as expected for that season.

      Aloha.
