I’ll be in Honolulu from 2/13/17 till 2/19 departing on the 20th. Looking for (hopefully) great rate for Oceanside hotel. Lived there 32 years ago returning 1st time, by myself. Ron

Honolulu hotels are very expensive unfortunately. The last time we were in Honolulu we stayed at an Airbnb vacation rental which worked out great.

In June of 2015 we saw the Royal Hawaiian band in Kauai. First time in over 87 years they were on Kauai. Any talk of them coming back?
After 9 trips to the islands, 4 on Kauai, I thought I knew a lot about Kauai…until I bought the book you recommend, The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook. Thanks, going to use it on our 2 week January trip.

For your dates we do find a bit less – $518 on American. It is the return date that is making is more expensive. To get down to the $400’s return a day later or earlier.

Aloha! This is the best site, I love getting Hawaii updates in my inbox….. Just thinking about Hawaii makes me smile. We’re visiting Maui, March 25, for a week. I’ve been watching airfare out of SLC and it’s expensive. Over $800 a person. I know spring break is high price season, but I’m wondering if there’s any chance of a good deal between now and February? Or if you could please tell me where I should be watching for flight deals, besides your awesome website?

Thank you. Yes it is possible. Spring break has become a moving target over the past few years. For 2017, high season started in late March, then moved to early April, now is moving back to late March again. So do stay tuned and keep watching.

My wife and I are looking at flying to Oahu in January, then jumping to Kauai them returning home to St. Louis from Kauai. We’ve done this before and found it more cost efficient to book 3 separate one way flights. However it seems that these low fares have come and gone already. Do you have any idea when these discounted fares will be offered again?

Island hopping ends up wasting a ton of time in addition to it being costly. Really 1/2 day minimum or even more with significant vacation disruption. Unless you stay longer, we wouldn’t recommend that.

We love to post deals to and from the east coast whenever we see them (and that’s a route we use frequently ourselves). Right now, for November travel, flights with any reasonable connection are starting at about $800 and up. That could improve. A longer layover (up to 12 hours) an result in pricing of around $700. This could improve with the next fare sale so from our take, today isn’t a good day to buy. Target price with 13 hour transit time is something in $700’s.

Thanks for the awesome website. I have been following you for some 6 months or so but I have a question regarding frequent travel to Hawaii. My husband has to travel there quarterly for work and I was wondering what points system you might suggest for him to accrue travel credit in order for me to go with him once a year.

Thank you! First question that comes to mind of course is where you’re flying from and if you have other travels to take into consideration in mileage accrual. Generally speaking, miles aren’t worth a lot, perhaps a penny a miles, and always decreasing. The airline credit cards offer bonus miles and/or a companion ticket for signing up (Alaska and Hawaiian) and that might be something to look into as well.

I am thinking of spending the winter in Hawaii, and have not only never been, but haven’t flown in 17 years… My question is, if I am planning on leaving in Nov/Dec, and coming home in March, is it cheaper to buy a one way ticket, and then purchase a ticket when I come home, or is it better to buy both at the same time? Also, I’ve followed your site for a while, and have always appreciated how down-to-earth, and honest you are. You seem to be just like me in terms of respecting companies that focus on great customer service. (In other words, I like you guys!) Anyway, I’m hoping to find a home to house sit, or an empty home that needs the home/landscaping taken care of, as my means of a place to stay while I’m there. Since I have no idea where to start, do you know of any local pages, sites, people, or places that you can refer me to, to help me search? I have no idea where to start looking.

Thanks for the nice comments. Quite a trip you’re envisioning. So you didn’t say where you are flying from and to, and that would help in doing comparison pricing. Let us know and we’ll look at it both ways. If you don’t want to do something like a house swap, what about looking for a house sitting or other temporary position on Craigslist for the island(s) that you’re considering?

I’ll be flying non-stop from Salt Lake. I’m willing to spend more on a flight, just to make sure I don’t have any worries. I actually work seasonally, so I’m thinking a winter somewhere warm is where I need to be. Using Craigslist makes me nervous, just because we all know about how many things are scams/dishonest people. I’m totally up for house sitting, I’m just having a hard time knowing where the best place is to look? Again, thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I know you have tons of comments on each post!

If you want to take the Delta nonstop for example, which is certainly most convenient, then the price works out slightly better when you buy a round trip. But if you’re aren’t sure of your return dates, you’ll be fine just buying one ways. Budget $400 each way for that flight. With a stop each way in LA, the price drops to $300 each way.
Certainly there are scams on Craigslist, but also legitimate offers. You’d need to vett that no matter what source you use, online or off. Good luck in that process.

Thank you! There is going to be a lot of noise and posturing before this gets settled. That’s just the nature of such things. Having said that we’re continuing to buy and fly on Hawaiian and are highly doubtful that any stoppage will occur. We simply aren’t in an environment for that to happen. If you aren’t comfortable with that, we suggest either 1) buying travel insurance or 2) flying on Alaska Airlines or another carrier.
